Fantasy match-up: Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk

Post by dagilechia »

i find this match-up very very intriguing, of course Fury has a big size advantage but Usyk is a special fighter, who you think would win this one? to me it's 50/50 now, it will change when Usyk will make his debut in HW (for better or worse for him)

The Gypsy King will outbox Usyk. Both are similar in terms, that they are elusive outfighters. Reach and height are good tools for boxers of such style. So Fury has an advantage, that he really can use. Furthermore, Usyk's inside game isn't proven, while Fury can fight inside and he can also maul smaller fighter down there. Fury is a pretty obvious choice for me.

Can't imagine how Usyk handles the huge size difference as his speed won't be an advantage for him in this fight. Yet he is a great boxer/puncher. I voted too close to call for now.

Size advantage probably proves the difference although I wouldn’t rule Usyk out. Need to see him at heavyweight first.

If Fury was 6’3 then Usyk would toy with him.

Experience, mentality, skill and a size advantage that can't be ignored all favour Fury but technical skill, ambition and prior accomplishment make it hard to not see Usyk as a dangerous threat.

Don't think it will happen anytime soon if at all sadly, would love to see Usyk put on some size and carry that speed and ability up with him into the heavyweight division.

Too early to predict a fight like this yet. Time will tell.

Usyk hasn't even fought at heavyweight yet. That makes speculation premature.

Still the OP posed the question. You can do another one after Usyk's first HW fight.

It sure is a fantasy match up. But, ya never know.

Usyk takes a few rounds to set himself- that might be OK as Fury isn't a fast and furious starter. Fury's reach is a problem, if he can land his jab, and do it often enough with the odd eye catching right hand, I can see Fury winning a dreary points decision. If Usyk can avoid the jab and get in range with combinations, he will keep Fury honest, but I don't see him winning just yet. It's the sheer size differences Usyk isn't used to.
I also don't think, like others it will end early. Both these guys have decent chins.

I had a thought- who would Usyk get in to spar with?
He might be able to replicate the height and reach, and even that is at a pinch, but movement, quirkiness, and hand speed are going to be elusive. I would say that issue alone is a hurdle for him.

Fury points - don't think many people understand when Tyson is in the mood he is so frustrating that rod of jab will be down Usyks throat

Why is everyone so high on Usyk?
I just don’t get it. Not athletically “gifted”, average everything except maybe Amateur experience. He’s like a “poor man’s” Kovalev, who cares about a matchup vs Fury? More realistic comparisons would be vs Parker or Kevin Johnson. Simply in terms of pro accomplishments.

I don't agree at all. Usyk is the most complete fighter P4P, IMHO.

Fury beats Usyk in a fight many casuals would deem dull, but competitive. The fight probably won't ever happen though (due to networkpromotional rivalries).

Wow, really?

Evander easily the greatest CW Champ of ALL TIME and he was almost always ignored in regards to P4P.

I hope your optimism and knowledge portends the future!

Poor man's Kovalev? He would swallow Krusher in a P4P matchup.

And now we're putting Kevin "Journeyman Punching Bag" Johnson in the same sentence as Usyk?

Evander most certainly wasn't ignored at p4p when he ruled cruiser. As for fury's ramrod jab, they come about 8 or 10 times a round and might not be as effective vs a lefty.
