Barrera vs Juarez.
Barrera vs Juarez.
Good fight that one, probably a fair verdict.... I didn't do a round by round scorecard, because I thought there was no need after 7 rounds (as I had only given Jaurez the third up untill that point).... However, it is feeasable that Juarez took all of 8-12 making it a draw, but I thought Barrera surely won/drew one or two of them..
However, while I didn't agree with his card - I did agree with Jim Watt's analysis that it was Juarez who was in control and if you look at the fight on the whole then it is only one winnner - thats why I think a draw might have been fair. Barrera (probably if a do a round by round) technically won on my card, but he certainly didn't beat Juarez.
Having said that, I do think Barrera would win a rematch fairly comfortably.... I have questionned Barrera's stamina since the Pacquiao fight... I was alarmed how he seemingly put Morales back in the fight in their third meeting and was also concerned how he needed to regroup when he tried and failed to stop Paulie Ayalia. I think it was the ninth round which I scored for Ayalia cause Barrera needed it off.
Its all very well having rounds here and there off after a career he has had, but he looked absolutely spent after 7 rounds and showed a good heart to be competitive in the later stages. So I do think a combination of maybe taking Juarez lightly and the nose damage effected his breathing/stamina in the latter stages... This should be redressed in a rematch, one which I would favour Barrera considerably.
However, I do want to see Barrera go anyway near Pacquiao (or even Morales) based on that showing... I want to see him have one more fight before retiring and thats vs Jesus Chavez for the Lightweight title.

BTW what awful commentary by Smith and McCory. What fight were they watching in the opening stages... It was Juarez this Juarez that - forgetting that it was Barrera taking the rounds. How McCory saw it a draw after 6 and then a draw after 12 is beyond me.
I think it was only after they Harold Ledderman's half way through that they realised "we might have dropped a bollock here" and started to give Barrera some props... and all the close rounds from the Halfway stage McCory gave to Barrera to compensate for his earlier bias.
Incidently, the scorecards seems to be a little suspicious apparently people with the HBO feed saw the mastercards and the judges who scored it a draw and a Barerra win actually crossed out a 9 by Barrera on the 12th round and changed it to a 10. All very suspecious... although, it does seem the majority of folk stateside feel that if anyone won it was Barrera.

Don't you mean Glen McCrory Stu? Or as I only watched the delayed repeat this morning did the live feed have different commentators?stujones wrote:However, while I didn't agree with his card - I did agree with Jim Watt's analysis that it was Juarez who was in control and if you look at the fight on the whole then it is only one winnner - .
Apart from a rematch with the winner of Morales vs Pacquiao are there many big fights out there that Barrera can get 'up' for these days? Maybe like you said a fight with Jesus Chavez for the Lightweightweight Title so Barrera can attempt to become a four weight Champion is the best move like you say. But there is part of me that thinks that Barreras pride will force him, if possible, into a rematch with Pacquiao and unless the favourite son of the Philippines goes into a sudden decline (which does happen to high octain fighters from time to time) I think is a bad match for Barrera at this stage of his long, punishing career. Pacquiaos combination of speed, power and workrate would again cause many problems for the faiding Mexican.
Agreed.stujones wrote:BTW what awful commentary by Smith and McCory..
Over the years Adam Smith has to be fair improved a lot as a commontater but I still feel at time he says what he thinks people what to hear or what just sounds good rather that what is ACTUALLY happening in the fight.

The live programme had Jim and Nicky Piper in the studio. Piper had it Barrera by 1, Jim had it Juarez by 3.KOJOE90 wrote:Don't you mean Glen McCrory Stu? Ah! that's what I assumed after reading you second post which wasn't posted untill I had typed out my first post.stujones wrote:The live programme had Jim and Nicky Piper in the studio. I had it to Juarez by 2.
Didn't like the Sky build up to the fight. They only seemed to focus on Barerra and his past fights until the point where you nearly forgot that Barerra was fighting someone else. By the clips they were showing you'd think you were getting Barerra/Morales IV as they talked and showed Morales more than Juarez.

I have always felt the 'SKY Boxing team' have for years had 'a thing' for Barrera, which up to a point is understandable as he is a remarkable fighter, but from time to time I think they have gone a little over the top.Cannibal wrote:I had it to Juarez by 2.

Barrera by 2 here, great fight that was, perhaps fight of the year. 2nd viewing was even better. This was no standard defence, Juarez is a highly ranked prospect, who will be champ in a few fights down the line.
I agree that the commentators spent the first few rounds discussing Barreras career instead of the fight itself, but it was a war in the end, Rocky came on strong but too little too late. Showed he has what it takes to fight in the trenches too. Great fight.

I think Barrera gets cut way to much slack on not taking the rematch with Manny. If that was anyone else people would say he's running scared. And what about Skys outrageous rankings! They have both Marco AND Morales above Manny, its totally insane! Seeing as how Manny has beaten both and would almost certainly beat them again in rematches!
Barrera took the rounds off from 8 through 12. He was done. He mostly only had bursts of punches from then on trying to steal the rounds.

Sometimes I think Barrera gets a little overated due to his win over Hamed and Trilogies with Morales too.Lefthookhappy19 wrote:I think Barrera gets cut way to much slack on not taking the rematch with Manny. At the time Juarez fought Soto I was reading how they thought he was limited now thinking he's a good prospect again.

Barrera should retire. He's had an amazing career, but he is finally starting to look a little shot. Pacquiao would destroy him even more quickly than last time at this stage, and he with that in mind he has little to gain by taking a rematch. He should take maybe one more winnable fight by way of a farewell and then hang them up. He has nothing left to achieve.

I think Juarez won by one. I liked his pressure, I liked the 3 or 4 massive shots that should've swung tight rounds his way, and I liked is educated pressure that was giving Barrera major problems. Was a bit like Larry Holmes v Tim Witherspoon, a genuine classic that was controversial (though this fight wasn't as good). Spoon, like Juarez, came forward in a very compact way, cut off the ring well, nullified the jab, closed the gap well - and scored some lovely shots. Like Spoon, however, he could have thrown a good few more punches. Was economical to say the least, with his punches, but I think he was very controlled, asserted the pace of the fight, and deserved to win

I had Barrera winning 116-113. A very good fight. Its clear Barrera is coming to the end of his career, although there were glimpses of the Barrera of old in there when he rattled off a few combos he does seem to be on the wane. I'd like to see him retire now, perhaps the Chavez fight at 135 as a farewell fight. Was just thinking yesterday what an amazing career, 27 world title fights!!

I was gutted by the Barrera fight.
He's been a hero of mine for a long long time, and is by far my fave boxer, but he was a shadow of his former self in that fight.
A shadow even of himself in the 3'rd Morales fight.
The younger, fresher man gave him allsorts of problems, and did work Barrera hard as was his gameplan.
Whenever Barrera had the energy to let his shots go the gulf in class was evident, and he took Juarez apart. He just couldn't keep it up.
I've no problems with Barrera winnning a tough split decision, he almost come unstuck, but he rode it out. Good Man!!
Now I hope he recognises the warning signs, and retires a legend!!!!
