Jerry "The Byrdstown Bomber" Evans

Post by HomicideHenry »

Joshua Evans informed me the following concerning the "Tom Tullings" match:
The name Tom Tullings was a mis print. It was an exhibition bout against Al Hughes on 3-21-98.

So it's not a pro fight and needs to be taken off the record or at the very least the name "Tom Tullings" needs replaced with Al Hughes.

The above mentioned article features Al Hughes and his son and daughter who all fought on the same card one night.

I took out the Tom Tullings bout. It was unconfirmed and may indeed have referred to the Al Hughes exhibition (although Hughes may have been replaced at the last moment). Would it be possible to post the article in a higher resolution?

I don't have a higher resolution.

Joshua Evans told me that it was Al Hughes second comeback fight--- Jerry Evans simply could not get a license to actually compete in pro fights due to his advanced age; however the commission was lenient enough to allow Jerry Evans to fight Hughes in an exhibition bout.

What I do know is that Joshua Evans said it was featured in the Star Press/Muncie Star and that Tom Tullings was a misprint, because Hughes was the ex-kickboxer sporting a mohawk.

How it was considered a "draw" is beyond me :maybe: unless that was the public consensus of the match.

If you go there to the "visitors posts" section you will see my conversation with Joshua Evans concerning this matter. Maybe you can get a better resolution than I can get cus I'm using a phone for everything.

Maybe Mr. Evans' bio on BoxRec will surely still list the exhibition as having occurred on the date Joshua Evans specified?

It was such an urban legend in boxing after all for years and years whether he had a comeback or not. It'd be a disservice not to mention it in his biography what actually occurred.

For clarification, the exhibition against Hughes was not at a sanctioned bout. It took place at a local “King of the Ring” tough man type event. As far as getting a license to box at his age at that time-I’m sure it was possible, but he chose not too.

I also noticed on boxrec that some of Jerry’s record is incomplete and/or missing. But I understand that boxrec is a work in progress. Thanks for helping to clear this up!
From Joshua Evans...

He said sometime this week he and his dad (the Mr. Jerry Evans) will compile the list of missing fights on his record.

For fights to be added, we will need newspapers clippings or other contemporary reports. The correct birthdate of Jerry Evans is also missing: I think the Jan 1 1947 date is just a default date. Thanks for your help.

Was just informed the record is just fine :TU: the only issue was "Tom Tullings", I think it was some other website that had the record incomplete.
