Calzaghe/Hopkins...
Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
if you think hopkins won, let alone won clear, youve been conned by the old man
Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
a lot of ppl somehow think hopkins won despite being joes bitch boy for most of the rounds, hop got totally outworked and outlanded and aside from the kd its hardly like he was landing these massively effective shots when he did ocassionaly land. just suckered in the ppl who are suckers for anyone with a 'technical/masterful boxer' rep
Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
Calzaghe literally landed nothing of note. It was just horrible scuffing, slapping, hammer punches all night. All clean shots were landed by Hopkins.
Hopkins might not have had his hand raised, but not only did he beat Joe, he ended his career.
The deal was already done to fight Pavlik, it was all sorted with Arum and basically needed Joe's signature ! He then left the "best promoter in the world" (his own words 6 months earlier) to seek a fight with the remains of Roy Jones Snr.
Roy Jones was utterly nowhere in boxing when that phonecall came out of the blue.
Infact, he'd been whoring himself at Marcus Beyer's comeback fight, saying a fight between him and beyer would be wonderful. (Beyer hadn't fought in 3 years, and after one bout retired again).
Anyway, going back to the fight - I remember David Haye and Duke McKenzie saying they rooted for Joe, but no way he won that fight. No way.
In the press conference Hopkins mocked Calzaghe, and asked the antendees to compare their faces. Bhop said he was off to do a modelling shoot straight after - and then pointed at the utterly battered face of Calzaghe.

Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
cal certanly landed enough to make hopkins mopey and shelled up throwing hardly anything. hop prefered to be on his knees, like i know gomez so much loved about dirrels showing vs his boy carl. speaking of not landing clean.....
Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
If it weren't in Vegas, it would've been unanimous with scores at 116-111 at the very least. The first round knockdown notwithstanding.jamamb wrote: ↑20 Mar 2019, 12:24 a lot of ppl somehow think hopkins won despite being joes bitch boy for most of the rounds, hop got totally outworked and outlanded and aside from the kd its hardly like he was landing these massively effective shots when he did ocassionaly land. just suckered in the ppl who are suckers for anyone with a 'technical/masterful boxer' rep
Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
ya i agree, always found it bizarre how people could be convinced hopkins deserved it , he was limp and lame pretty much all night
Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
Hopkins hugged and held more than he punched.
Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
hugged, held, bitched, moaned, outlanded by 100+ shots, got down on his knees and told joe he loved him....but apparently thats 'effective boxing' to a lot of ppl

Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
Clear calzaghe win.
Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
At the time it was disappointing so I was harder on Joe. Hopkins made it close due to the knockdown and the late crying to the ref which broke Calzaghe’s rhythm and allowed Hopkins to salvage a round. Calzaghe’s pace, brain and tendency to cuff - rather than turning over the shots - allowed him to catch Hopkins more often than almost all people who faced “The Executioner.” Very ugly fight but in hindsight- as with the Reid fight - Joe appears a clearer victor.
I don’t think Joe came in with a strategy. His plan was to land big punches, and hurt the older man. He’d said in an interview on fightnews. He came in looking soft and arrogant and looked foolish until - IMO - he used his adaptability and awkwardness to just “wing it” and outhustle Hopkins. By this late stage due to bad hands Joe’s punching technique was very poor - it was a big win but not an easy one to enjoy.

Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
I had Calzaghe winning clearly but not a total rout.
Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
Clear win for Joe C., and you could see he had B-Hop frustrated in the 2nd half of the fight with his speed and work rate.

i got the calzaghe-kessler dvd.handsofstone wrote: ↑20 Mar 2019, 04:58 Ive never seen it since watching it live, Calzaghe the deserved winner for me, ive got the dvd as well but have only watched the extras including Buncey's arse fainting when Hopkins started going off on one in the caravan![]()
then found the version i recorded off the telly.
8-4 or 7-4-1 even is about right for joe.
Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
Calzaghe I think.

Haha I’ve missed you mate, your regular JC downers used to amuse me on here.G0mez wrote: ↑20 Mar 2019, 12:28 Calzaghe literally landed nothing of note. It was just horrible scuffing, slapping, hammer punches all night. All clean shots were landed by Hopkins.

Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
Absolutely 5hit fight....but Hopkins' fights are all 5hit fights.
Calzaghe had more than his fair share of stinkers too, but IMO did enough to win the decision.
Hopkins status is a joke and is consistently one of worst entertainers in the sport. For the sake of boxing, thanks god he's gone.

Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
I've never watched it back but from memory it was a clear win for Calzaghe with Hopkins looking for a way out as he appeared to be struggling with the pace. To think Hopkins went on to beat some good names after that as well.

I wonder if this is one of the least re-watched ‘big’ fights ever? Hardly anyone on here seems to have watched it again. With good reason, of course, it was fvcking awful.

Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
I went and looked at Eye on the ring site.
50% controversy rating.
Half saw it for Calzaghe the other half for Hopkins.
I'm going to gave to watch it again because for the life of me I don't remember much of it.

Scored a draw at the time. Awful fight, but then most hopkins fights were by that time.

Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
I had Hopkins razor thin
Re: Calzaghe/Hopkins...
I was pilled up and steaming when I watched it live and Hopkins counter punching really impressed me, when I rewatched sober I gave it to joe by a Cunthair. Even tho joe deservedly won, Hops gave him a lesson
