Very good performance and spectacular knockout from Cooney, but Lyle was shot, possibly more so than Norton was.

They should've put Shavers in there with Gerry. Even Coetzee.

I think the Lyle and Norton fights in particular gave fans (including myself) a false notion of Cooney's power.

He had decent power and decent boxing skills but his power was very overrated and yes I fell for it.

I agree. Both were shot and yet both wins were held aloft as great KO's. I wonder how Gerry would've done against a younger Lyle. I think he still beats a younger Norton. Styles.

Cooney had good power. His problem was his mind and, to a smaller percent, his management.
He should have been encouraged by his fight with Holmes, not go off on some depressed 2 year plus bender.

If, let’s say Tunney, would have crawled into a hole after the first Greb fight, where would that have gotten him?
Instead, he learned from it. Same thing Louis, etc.

A younger Norton? That's a good question. I could see it going either way. Norton beats up Cooney like he beat up Quarry and many others or a similar resul to their fight. My hunch would be the former but who knows but Kalan.

True, his problem was his mind and lack of tenacity. His attitude was opposite of that of a Tunney's. Tunney supposedly threw hundreds of right hands in a row in prep for Dempsey. I read once where Cooney literally didn't want to get back in the gym because he'd have to do his hair again.

But I do think his power was overrated as well.

As you may know, Cooney - Shavers was on the undercard of Hearns - Cuevas. Cooney got injured, as happened many many times in his career, and Randall Cobb stepped in.

I still question whether Gerry was injured or his management worried Earnie would injure their bank accounts.

Cooney certainly pulled out of a lot of 'done deal' fights during his career. Shavers, a televised Eddie Lopez rematch, Joe Bugner, the Holmes postponement, several Phil Brown postponements, Mike Weaver. That's off the top of my head.

I didn't, his performance against Holmes is overrated too. He was impressive against Chaplin. That was his best win.

Norton would destroy Gerry in his prime.

I couldn't say that for certain. Norton had a shvtload of issues with big hitters. Cooney had a more than decent left hook.

Everyone had issues getting hit by foreman and shavers. His chin problems are vastly overstated. His chin was much better than cooneys and he was much tougher to hit.

Kenny was one of my favs during the '70's. He wasn't very tough to hit and he had issues when tagged by power punchers. He was down several times in his career before beating Ali. While I can't say 100% that Cooney would've beaten him, Gerry had a better chance against prime Norton than prime Lyle. Lyle had a granite chin and proved he could box (see Ali fight) as well as hit freakin' hard.
