What a strange statement Lee-Why do so many people still die then ?
Treatment and early screening have meant earlier detection,but to many it`s still a terminal illness.

Depends what type and how early it is...

Quite, however late discovery of very aggressive stage 4 cancers with high mortality rates can still be survived.
Doesn’t seem to be any information about his diagnosis online anywhere.

Cancer is still an absolute bastard and often a silent killer. My dad had a week of the shits and ONE bloody stool and went to the doctor - it was already effectively too late.

I wish David all the best, he was a talented boxer - and so young.

if its skin, testicular etc then he has a good chance...

if its pancreatic, liver etc.....then he is sadly buggered.

I know what you mean. I would say Cancer is just the same but the treatment of some cancers is so much more advanced and recovery rates have improved so much.
For the worst types though it can still be a death sentence - the case of Dean Francis an awful example.

Mine was 85-90% likely to kill me within 5 years.
Stage 4, very aggressive, stomach, blood, bones, liver, spleen and spine.
It’s gone now.

My mate had stage 2 lung cancer, they said his prognosis was good, he was dead in 3 months.

Yes James, some just do not respond to the Chemo...... there is lots of papers out there that really question its use - particularly in Stage 4 cancers.

But hopefully they'll get there.

I know a guy who had Stage 4 Cancer from Prostate to Bones.... was told he would live 2 years max with Chemo to prolong life..... he refused Chemo and is now 3 years since diagnosis and still going on Holidays etc. Not symptom free and says he's on borrowed time, but seems to be doing okay on face value. You'd never know he had Cancer.

My old man diagnosed at the same time and if anything caught earlier...... wanted all the treatments to beat it - dead within 6 months. Same age, fitter and healthier I would say. It makes you think.

Sadly because my friend also had COPD, and blood clots in his lungs, immunotherapy had to be ruled out as he wssnt physically strong enough to endure the effects, especially as the clots would have presented a life threatening risk due to inflammatory effects of immunotherapy.

Whats forgotten is that some people go into spontaneous remission even in advanced metastasized cancers, but its very hard to predict. It will improve as gene based therapies become more prevalent and we are able to offer highly tailored treatments.
