New Boxing "Age Divisions"

Post by HeavyHitters »

What would you guys think if the boxing associations decided to use age as another way to create more divisions?

For instance, in the heavyweight division ( 200 lbs and up ):

Junior Division: Ages 17-25

Prime Division: Ages 26-34

Senior Division: Ages 35-44

Grand Division: 45-50 ( extra rules in place for safety precautions )

Legends Division: Ages 51-55 ( extra rules in place for safety precautions, along with mandatory headgear and extra padded gloves ).

I hate to say this, but if the IBF, WBA, WBC, and the WBO got ahold of this idea, they probably would implement it, hoping for more revenue streams.

Alright, I'll just create my own boxing organization, and implement this new concept,

preemptive strike the alphabet soups, and patent my idea so they can't do it as well.

How does The WBX sound!?

My first championship fight in the Legends Division would be the fight that should have happened, but never did:

Riddick "Big Daddy" Bowe( 51 ) vs. Lennox Lewis(54).

Would fighters in one age division be allowed to fight those in the other divisions?

Not in my WBX association.

One could only move up to the next division when they get to the next age minimum, or if they have a valid fake ID.

The only way to move down a division would be if they have the use of a time machine and can transport back in time to the younger age category.

Or one could bypass the last two statements by depositing $5,000 in my savings account.

I see that even in your revised boxing structure, money still rules.

But I dunno. Restricting it to age (sans payoffs) would deprive us of seeing a 17 year old Wilfred Benitez stun a great senior champion like Antonio Cervantes.

Or a teenage Pipino Cuevas dismantle a "prime division" world champion Angel Espada.

Those "age old" surprises always give boxing a refreshing, unexpected jolt.

WBC already have a Youth champion..

Also, NABF, which is basically IBF, have a junior title.

I think you'll need to address the rounds and length of them too. The old boys could go 30 sec per round maybe :OhYes:

There was something years ago called LBO (Legends Boxing Organisation) and I think Bonecrusher Smith won their title. Also, last year (or the year before) Andreas Sidon beat some ancient British chap for the veterans world title on some BIBA type show.

What a great idea. That's jusr what we need, more titles for fighters to compete for. Everyone gets a belt. Nobody feels left out. Inclusivity. We're working towards it.

There was a time I could name at least the top ten contenders in any weight division you cared to mention. The way things are going it'll be a struggle to name the divisions never mind who holds all the belts.

Where is the t*rd emoji when you need it?

No, I'm not in favor of that.

Boxing OUGHT to be a sport of merit. If you're 17 years old, or younger, and could beat 30 year olds (ie, Nipper Pat Daly) you ought to be able to fight them.

Same with the old guys. If there was some guy 60, 65, even 70 years old capable of beating guys in their 20s, 30s and 40s, then they ought to be able to fight them.

The problem with boxing "these days" is that it's too damn restrictive. Prior to the Muhammad Ali Act and the federal ID the sport was better in virtually every aspect of the business--- especially in this particular category as well as "David & Goliath" matches where guys like Mickey Walker was fighting for the heavyweight title.

If we went by the standards of today, we'd of never seen Dempsey-Willard or Foreman-Moorer, etc. Once upon a time in boxing the human spirit and capability wasn't diminished, undermined, and prohibited.

I've always been of the belief guys like Hagler, Duran, Leonard, etc could have beaten heavyweight journeymen. If you have the ability to do it--- weight classes and age differences be damned.

And that case can also be made for women boxers. I'm absolutely certain that many top and intermediate women boxers could beat tiersmen & some journeymen who are men. I have no issue if a woman wanted to fight a man--- within reason.

Heck, I'm also an advocate of hybrid rules or hybrid matches. LaMar Clark back in the day fought 3, 4, 5, 6 guys in a single event and many of them were matches that allowed kicks or wrestling holds but counted on his pro boxing record. Why not allow such a match on someone's record in today's world?

After all if two boxers can mutually agree to a No-Contest prior to the match, regardless if someone got kayoed, why couldn't two men mutually agree to elbows or knees or even bare fists?

Some guys peak at different times.

Wilfred Benitez was already past his best by what you'd consider to be "Prime Years"

So the concept fails right there. Because people are not all created equally. Sometimes a 40 year old guy can be too much for a 28 year old. Sometimes an 18 year old can kick the sh*t out of a 32 year old. Just depends on who.

I can’t decide if this is a creative idea or someone trolling.

There are already titles to cater for youth.

There aren’t titles to reward mentally unstable risk taking veterans on a path of self destruction.

Let’s not encourage middle-aged individuals to engage in sporting activities that may result pugilistic dementia.

I don't remotely consider it trolling.

Tounge in cheek, yes. But trolling no.

I'm certain the concept of age brackets has been raised before in a strictly serious context.

Was thinking the exact same thing as I read the replies!

Though I really wouldn't put it past one of the ABCs to genuinely consider something along these lines :brick:
