Early on it's anybody's fight. If Briggs hasn't gotten Cooney outta there by say Round 4. The edge swings to Cooney in a big way.

This would be a fun 2 or 3 rounds. But Cooney would win

Cooney wins by reach and power but has to be careful not to punch too hard and break his hands on Briggs' head.

Briggs had a decent chin (see Vitali vs Shannon) and because of that would've eventually caught Cooney's chandelier chin.

When the going gets tough, Gerry looks for a way out. Briggs in mid rounds.

Vitali isn't a puncher. Briggs has terrible stamina.

You're not wrong. But Briggs only needs to land one good punch on Cooney's chin to put the wheels in motion for a ko like he did against Sultan Ibragimov. Not saying Sultan was a big puncher, just that Briggs was out of gas early and hung on long enough to land one good shot.

I wouldn't be surprised either way. They're both mediocre.

I don't think anyone's arguing with that.

Decent is about as far as I would go with Brigg's chin. I remember when HBO was trying to hype him up and then he got blown out by Darroll Wilson.
The Cooney that fought Holmes would have beaten him easily.

I'll agree with decent. I remember that too with HBO. He looked like a comer and then came crashing down against Wilson. The Cooney who fought Holmes vs the Briggs that fought Foreman wouldn't be a blowout either way. Cooney's chin is the big question. I'll concede that Cooney was the better fighter.

Foreman beat Briggs handily at almost 50 years old.

Last I looked, it was MD in favor of Briggs with the dissenting vote a draw. Now, there are questions concerning those judges, but Briggs was able to last with Foreman for the duration and I think he MIGHT be able to last long enough with Cooney to get that one good shot on Cooney's crystalline jaw.

That was a rancid decision and that was coming off of foreman getting preferential judging against savarese.

It was, and it was very green judges who were selected for the fight. Big George hung on a bit too long and was certainly hurt by "Canelo" type judging, maybe worse. But again, the Briggs that stood in there MIGHT last long enough to take Cooney out.

I don't see a longer fight as an advantage to either.

I already said it's a tough one, gun to my head I'd pick Cooney. Either way I think it's over pretty early.

Cooney didn't have as bad of a chin as people think he had. His 3 kayo losses ought to have asterisks by them.

First, his loss to Foreman in 1990 was three years after his last fight--- Cooney had absolutely no tune-up bouts unless you count a three round exhibition on Tuesday Night Fights. He was a promoter for the event (Foreman vs Cooney) ffs.

Second, he only had 3 fights between 1982-1986 (2 in '84 & 1 in '86) and wasn't even ranked in the top ten when he fought Michael Spinks--- Spinks himself was stripped of his titles for fighting Cooney instead of Tony Tucker. Cooney was basically a full blown addict at this time, and rusty as hell.

Third, prior to facing Larry Holmes he was inactive for over a year due to injury. Holmes may have beaten Cooney regardless, however, such things ought to be taken into consideration.

Now somebody argued because Briggs went 12 with Foreman he'd most likely beat Cooney because he was able to take Foreman's punches--- but let's consider what Ron Lyle said of Cooney after he fought him: "He's the hardest hitter I've ever faced."

Prime vs Prime, Cooney & Briggs... Ehhh... I'd probably lean towards Cooney via kayo because "prime" Briggs lost by knockout to Darroll Wilson in three rounds when Briggs was 25-0-0 just 4 fights before Foreman. And of course Lewis kayoed Briggs in 5 rounds right after Foreman.

Fast starters... Which is what Cooney was... Would have been a bad result for Briggs.

How is this even a debate!? Cooney would take Briggs's head off. Briggs did not have a chin. KOd by Wilson, used by Lewis as a basketball, Botha had him reeling all over the ring, McCline had him over, Ibragimov too. How much evidence do you need? His style was to stand up straight with his chin in the air and load up. Suicide versus Cooney, who would spatter the canvas with peroxide dreadlock dye.
