Prospect watch - Tomas Salek

Post by candyslim »

For those of us who like to monitor the progress of promising young heavyweights, I see Salek is in a very decent match on 6th April with Pavel Sour for the Czech Heavyweight Title.

Tomas has been on my radar for a while and in Pavel Sour he faces an opponent 16 years older. Sour got crushed by Hrgovic when he tried to step up, but it is his only defeat and he should provide a decent test for the twenty year old.

I just thought I'd mention it.

Salek is on my watchlist as a suspect not quite a prospect yet. I agree this match will be telling for the lad's progress, although his UD win over Petr Frohlich was hardly inspiring.

True but you have to be respectful of his youth. Not too many 20 or 21 year olds have Dubois-type power. That may or may not come later.

There is a young English prospect, or suspect to use your distinction, called Naylor Ball who recently got derailed by the tough and improving Kamil Sokolowski in a fight which I imagine might be described as man versus boy. Naylor is only 20 and looked pretty puny even in a winning fight I watched him in. It might be a totally different story in another five years ... there again it might not.

Plenty of time for Ball and Salek to develop man-strength and power.

I'm not terribly surpised. Apart from getting battered by Hrgovic, Sour is a decent pro and a good test for a twenty year old (unless he is a bit out of the ordinary like Dubois - now 21 of course).

That need not be the end of Salek's ambition, he just has to put it down to experience and keep trying to improve.

Looks like you NAILED it on this one Oog!! Salek looks more suspect than prospect like you said all along.

I was pulling for Salek...I generally root for the young up & comers since it's great to have new blood in the sport!! Didnt see the bout but based on the scoring it doesnt seem like it was that close. Sour won 99-90, 99-94 & 98-94.

Given the fact that Hrgovic KOd Sour in 1 it looks like Salek could have a tough time making it beyond the Euro level.
