Murat Gassiev to make HW debut in June

Post by oogiebe »

Former world champion Murat Gassiev could make his debut in the heavyweight division in June, according to the boxer's Russian coach Vitaly Slanov.

Gassiev will soon fly to the United States to train with head coach Abel Sanchez in Big Bear, California.

“Now Murat is training at home. But after some time he flies to the United States, to the base in Big Bear. He holds a weight of about 100 kg (220-pounds) and tries not to let any weight go. I think he will be ready to debut as a heavyweight in June,” said Slanov to tass.

In the summer of 2018, Gassiev suffered his first career defeat with a twelve round decision loss to Oleksandr Usyk. The loss, in the World Boxing Super Series tournament final, would cost Gassiev his cruiserweight belts under the World Boxing Association (WBA) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF).

Usyk himself has officially jumped to heavyweight, and makes his debut in that division next month.

In total, the Gassiev has a record of 26 victories (19 by KO) and one loss.

I like Gassiev's chances at HW. He has the frame to fill out nicely (6'3.5") and he's only 25 so he can really take a moderate pace of step up fights. Could maybe setup a rematch in a year with Usyk?

gassiev is not 6'3.5, he was short then usyk, no interest in a rematch of a 12-0 fight

either way, i think the elite cws should be able to crack the top 20 at least, and some much higher

I would. Gassiev is still a babe in boxing years (25), and after some additional development, I'd be interested in seeing how he'd fair up against Usyk in a rematch.

Don't forget that Gassiev was only 23 when they fought. I would like to see a rematch in a couple years if they both do well at HW.

maybe, but a year sounds too soon, i think it wouldnt come until usyks had a shot at the belts and made much of his hw run already

That could very well be, in fact makes sense. By the way, I went and re-watched the weigh-in and Gassiev is a good 1/2 to 1 inch taller than Usyk.

He might be among the top ten HW by the end of this year.
But, I can not imagine him defeating Joshua, Wilder, Fury and Usyk in the near future.
I expect him in the battles for the belts about 2024.

Curious that at weigh-in the heights were listed as they are in BoxRec.

a lot of times numbers get out there and just get reused, murat has never looked that tall imo and clearly was no taller at the weigh in, unless usyks got lifts lol. gass was no taller then dorticos either

They both had similar shoes on. Usyk actually looks the taller of the two.

Usyk is usually listed at 6"3.5".

Good sized even if modern fans consider him a "small man."

Amazing that 6'3.5" is considered small now.

What 's even more amazing is that so many fans believe that a heavyweight can't be successful if he's Usyk's height.

Last year in boxing history section people were saying we will never see a 6 ft 3 inch world heavyweight champion again.
Now Hal of the forum have picked Usyk to do just that.
Fans are a fickle bunch

If you have the skills, there should be no problem neutralizing bigger guys.

Tyson and Frazier broke down plenty heavyweights who towered over them.

But boxer years are almost like dog years compared to human years. In 15 years he'll be considered an old geezer ready for the rocking chair.
