Wilder vs Breazeale to be on Sky Sports

Once again displaying his powerful position as a free agent, Deontay Wilder has secured Sky Sports for his next world title defense.

The WBC heavyweight champion fought out a twelve round classic with Tyson Fury last December, broadcast on BT Sport in the United Kingdom.

After much deliberation, Wilder has decided to accept an offer to appear on BT Sport’s rival network for his clash with Dominic Breazeale.

Confirming the deal on Monday, Head of Sky Sports Boxing, Adam Smith was clearly delighted to have secured the services of Wilder

No I think it's great Sky Sports are showing the fight. I'll be watching. It will increase his earnings no doubt, but it's small potatoes compared to what he could/should be earning if only he'd agree to fight Joshua.

We’re just over five weeks away from the Wilder-Breazeale fight, but the undercard hasn’t been announced yet. So I wouldn’t expect it to feature any decent bouts.

Also, the bout will be staged at 5am UK time, which means the viewership figures on Sky will be very low – almost negligible.

Sky are able to broadcast this PBC show, because Adam Smith is responsible for Sky’s International boxing events they cover. Eddie Hearn is not involved in this process – this is out-of-scope of Matchroom’s contract with Sky.

I strongly suspect that BT and ITV didn’t even bother to bid for this bout, because apart from a select few hard-core boxing aficionados, there won’t be any interest in this fight shown by British fight fans.

Wilder may earn a few extra “pennies” from Sky acquiring the UK broadcasting rights for his bout against Breazeale, but the impact it’ll have on his total payday will be trivial.

These so-called “announcement” articles are simply a marketing gimmick, intended to make mountains out of molehills in order to sell the fight. This isn’t a big deal for British fight fans.

While the live fight will be at daft am it won't stop Sky from plastering the fight all over their social media channels.

If Wilder scores a highlight reel KO they can again blast social media with that hyping up the explosive fight AJ-Wilder could be....

They will also show re-runs of the fight at more friendly times, maybe on a quiet Friday night which may get some casuals to see it.

So there is still scope to make it about promo work for the possible mega fight they could show in the not too distant future.
