Prospect Watch: Money Powell IV back in action

Post by oogiebe »

Super Middleweight prospect Money Powell IV back in action against Christian Aguirre April 13th on the undercard of Sergiy Derevyanchenko/Jack Culcay Middleweight bout.

Powell had a pretty decent amateur career and is a very hard hitter. His name was handed down from his great grandfather so don't get too caught up in that.

Powell is a fun watch and you can find some amateur highlights in the amateur thread and current scene thread on pro highlights.

i think your overplaying his power a bit, 5 kos in 10 fights vs nobodies isnt that powerful

he looks okay, but not really too impressive so far

He does hit hard. He needs to learn how to better use it at the pro level. He won't be a one punch KO guy like he was in the ams, and he'll need to learn to put better combinations together and learn to use his jab more effectively. I think he'll be a pretty good fighter.

pretty much any fighter of a somewhat decent level gets kos in the ams, that doesnt mean they are a puncher or hit very hard in the pros. i think your letting that amateur highlight vid get to you a bit

i think there are a lot better prospects out there, but well see what money can do in the years to come

I'm not saying he's going to be great. I'm saying he's worthy of watching and is a good prospect. Not all fighters have to be great to follow or be entertaining/competitive. This kid is just that. A kid. Let's see over the next 12 months what comes of him.

I dont think Powell's punching power will be an issue. Most prospects, even those who dont have much punching power, get lots of stoppage wins in their early pro bouts because of their low-caliber of opposition. If you've seen early Mayweather bouts (almost all were on TV), Floyd got lots of KOs: 6 of his first 7 bouts were stoppage wins (all in 1st or 2nd round) and 11 of his first 13 pro fights.

But for a rookie with as little pro experience as Powell, he has solid boxing skills & IMO that will his bread & butter in the pro ranks. I like his quick-handed combinations).Too early to tell if Money will be a top 10 pro but I think he is very promising at this point. I like the fact that 3 of Powell's first 9 bouts have been overseas. It's good for pro prospects to get that kind of experience (he had international experience in the ams too). Here's one of his bouts in Europe that went the full 6-round distance:

Great video!! I like the way Powell mixes up his head & body shots. Up & down, up & down...so the opponent doesnt know what's coming next.
