LOWEST UK PPV SALES - SOME SURPRISES

Post by Deserter »

Just stumbled across an article that lists them and I was genuinely shocked by a couple, most notably the first Froch vs Groves fight. To be fair to Eddie Hearn, to work from that baseline and turn the rematch into the commercial monster it became is quite an achievement:

LOWEST UK PPV SALES
18 September 2010 – Kell Brook vs. Michael Jennings (Sky Box Office) 15k
25 May 2013 – Carl Froch vs. Mikkel Kessler II (Sky Box Office) 32k
21 May 1966 – Muhammad Ali vs. Henry Cooper II (Pay TV) 40k
21 May 2011 – George Groves vs. James DeGale (Sky Box Office) 43k
23 November 2013 – Carl Froch vs. George Groves (Sky Box Office) 47k

Seen this article. Some sites claim Froch-Groves II did around 350k buys.

It actually did 900k

The first bout was a flop though.

Brook v Jennings was on the Magnificent Seven PPV wasn’t it? From what I remember, it wasn’t anywhere near the headline fight, it was relatively low down the bill?

Totally inaccurate numbers in there. Unsurprising as sky don’t release ppv buys even to shareholders.

Groves vs Froch 1 did somewhere in the region of 250-300k based on reports at the time and that was slightly less than the Kessler fight. Both were held in sold out arenas.

Suggest Ruthless RKO sticks to odd posts of twitter pictures.

Accurate PPV figures are contentious. But would I be right in thinking a boxers manager might have access to the figures if the boxer is on a percentage or is it simply the case that the boxer is on a fixed purse and that's it?

Here in the States there is always an upside on buys. That's how they get made. Promoters take the risk instead of networks.
