Featherweights: Danny Lopez vs Alexis Arguello

Post by elmersalsa »

American champion Danny "Little Red" Lopez was a devastating featherweight puncher. One of the greatest punchers ever pound per pound. But, so was The Explosive Thin Man Alexis Arguello of Nicaragua. Who wins in this explosive and entertaining match up?

I take Arguello easy. Loved little red, but he was a beatable guy. Maybe I'm swayed by his ko loss to Chacon.

Both were great guys. Can't see Lopez winning this fight. He may have made it interesting.

Arguello by massacre, he does everything Lopez does better, and he does a lot more.

Thinks Lopez loses a close UD.

I love Little Red, but his equalizer was his power, and this is one fight where he might not have even held that edge. Otherwise it's all Alexis.

I think we'd see some fireworks before Alexis puts him away around the 6th or 7th, though. He might even be sitting on his ass at some point.

I see it the same way
Lopez is not getting enough credit.

Sure he is. But Arguello is just that much better. Taking nothing away from Lopez but bestowing greatness on Alexis.

Alexis is an all time great. But the difference between the 2 is miniscule.
Alexis would win but Lopez would give him hell

I see the difference being quite large. Alexis would figure Lopez out and begin dismantling him by the third/fourth round and stop him between 9 and 11.

The difference is massive. Lopez had heart and power but the skill difference is another stratosphere. I'm hard pressed to see little red winning a round.

A bout with Alexis Arguello would be an absolutely terrible matchup for Danny "Little Red" Lopez. While Lopez had plenty of punching power and heart, his relative lack of skill would make him almost an ideal opponent for Arguello.

Yeah, it is not like it is Arguello at his best. He going to catch some lumps here and there against Danny.

I don't think it is so much people selling Lopez short. He was a very good fighter, and hopefully most people realize that. However, Arguello was on a totally different level.

Lopez was very exiting to watch and a hard puncher, but he took so many shots. Arguello would absolutely drill him, a huge beating prolonged by the heart and toughness of Lopez.
