nel tarleton

i once read a book of boxing stories - one of which was of nel tarletons famous bout with another guy (cant remember name) it was at a football ground i think - does anyone have any info on this book/this fight/tarleton in general

Great book, have it myself... also look out for 'Ring battles of the century' by Gilbert Odd... every chapter tells the story of a classic fight and it includes Tarletons fight with Al Phillips... this book was published in '48 so all the fights described are genuine classics that many people don't mention today... got this book when I was 12 and it hooked me onto boxing. Bit hard to find but it pops up on ebay now and then...

maybe it was the gilbert odd book that i remember standing for hours aged about 10 reading in a local library - i can remember the tarleton fight, excellent writing really captured my young imagination and i was hooked on boxing ever since - you and me both SILKOV (common ground at last!)

Yeh, its a small world 8) its a great book, also got chapters on Armstrong vs Roderick, Boon vs Danahar, and Lynch vs Kane among others... Odd used to be the editor of boxing News and wrote articles for them right into the 80s... which was one of the main reasons I started buying BN as I liked reading about the oldtimers...

yeah, ron olvers column was my favourite bit in BN - i like it when he reels off about 50 names (some of whom we know, others we dont) and i love it when he talks about the different boxing clubs around the place.
me and my father love talking about them because my fathers got a great memory for his boxing past.
i have ordered the book you suggested, it will come tomorrow i hope. i got the liverpool fighters book this morning.
do you have any more recommendations?

Yeah Olver is a good writer too BN in the 70s and 80s was a great read... earlier editions are excellent too... I've got quite a few from the 40s to the 60s... lots of stories on the turn of the century fighters etc... the readers letters pages are good too.
Two other good books by Odd are 'Debatable decisions' and 'Was the referee right' these highlight great fights of the past like 'Ring Battles...' with the added angle that they involve controversial endings... fights like Robinson vs Turpin 2, Dempsey vs Firpo, Carpentier vs TedKid Lewis... are amongst them... some recent books that I've got that I'd reccomend are 'Unforgiveable Blackness' which is a bio on Jack Johnson by Geoffrey Ward, 'The pussycat of Prizefighting' by Andrew Kaye which is a bio on Tiger Flowers but also looks a lot at the way coloured people were treated at that time... these two books go together quite well as Flowers was the first black champion since Jack Johnson. I've got loads of AutoBiographies on fighters... amongst the best are 'Flight of the Hawk' Arron Pryor... 'Raging Bull' Jake Lamotta... 'The Toy Bulldog' Mickey Walker... 'I Conteh' by John Conteh... 'In This Corner' by Pete Heller is another excellent book... interviewing various fighters from different eras... Where are you getting the Odd book from?....

i have ordered the ODD book from ALIBRIS which is a very good second hand book site - you can select whether you want to get your book from the UK or elsewhere in this now shrunken world of ours. i usually order from the UK as if the book doesnt arrive it is pheasable that you can locate the shop,visit it and punch the propriator's lights out.

this happened once (not the violent bit) but a "bookshop" didnt send me the copy of "boxing illustrated" i ordered and no amount of emails made the slightest bit of difference. so i'm careful to know that the seller is kosher before i order now.
i tell you something, though, you couldnt tear me away from old copies of boxing news and historical boxing items in general, they fascinate me. you are a lucky feller.
an amazing coincidence, i was only thinking today about TIGER FLOWERS and how nobody (or so i thought) had written his biography, and i come on here tonight and you were typing it in as i was thinking it.
i really must get a copy of that, being a greb man.

I've never got anything from ALIBRIS... I'll have to look it up. I usually get my stuff from either Amazon or Ebay... where you can see the record of sellers and usually not get ripped off. Second hand shops is another good source sometimes... also I have brought some books from Hedgerow books which is very reliable. I usually go to the annual boxing memorbillia fayre in Hammersmith every year and get some stuff there. Ebay used to be brilliant for boxing books and boxing news papers but it all seems to have dried up lately.... luckily though I've got so many books and mags that I'm more selective now and mainly concentrate on collecting fights.
You should be able to get the Flowers book on Amazon... another one to look out for is a biog on Battling Siki that is due out soon.... in fact I'm going to check if its been published yet...
Theres also two books on Charley Burley on Amazon... I have the one by Harry Otty... great read. Amazon is good because you can often get books at a much cheaper price than they are in the highstreet!... 8)

a review that suggests that there is a better book to read, the reviewers own book, in the first paragraph is not to be trusted.
i make my own mind up in these matters. i know enough about greb to know fact from fiction.

The Boxing Fayre I mentioned is usually once a year at the Novotel in Hammersmith.... usually round about mid October. One of the highlights of my year!.
I'm sure you'll like the Flowers book... it goes into the sociological side of things as well, for instance why Flowers was so popular with the whites while Jack Johnson was so unpopular. He comes across as quite a character and a showman who was no pushover.
I reccomend the Johnson book too... 'Unforgivable Blackness' ...you can get it in paperback now...
