Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
Surprise to me, new trainer TBA
Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
I think I like this news. Not a big Abel fan. That's two as Joe Joyce just moved over to Boothe.
Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
Not suprised , i actually don't rate his work , he seems to want to be a bigger star than his fighters , and his corner work is'nt up to much

I’ll miss him picking up GGG after the fights.
Looks like Abel is losing it all.
A lot of boxers leaving trainers these days.
TBF, GGG was with him since he made his US debut.

Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
GGG cuts ties with Sanchez, refused to keep him for less than half of previous fee!
By G. Leon
Greg Leon: Coach I want to be like you when I grow up, to be able to tell a fighter like Gennady Golovkin who just signed a nine figure deal that cutting my pay 80%, that ain't going to work for me even though it's still six figures so bye.
Abel Sanchez: "And it had to be that, it's unfortunate. I wouldn't be able to sleep with myself." GL: So you were getting 10% and now he gets that deal and it's time to chop your slice down big time? Abel Sanchez: "He gets a $100M deal and nobody deserves to be paid and nobody did anything I guess."
GL: Where do you think all of this came from? You've had this kid for nine years, if this was who he was chances are it would've happened sooner, like before or after the first Canelo fight for instance.
AS: "Two or three months ago we read about him being in a lawsuit with his old managers who all of a sudden were no longer his managers for whatever the reason. Somebody told me earlier today that they read an article where his wife is going to be in charge of the management situation and wants to be in charge of the management situation, so I have to assume that was part of it. Are you married? If you're married you know what that's like, you've got to live with that person day in and day out and maybe that had something to do with it I don't know."
GL: Living with your wife doesn't make her Egis Klimas..
AS: "Very true, but sometimes people look out for their family and don't give a shit about anybody else's family."
GL: In your opinion do you think they made this offer knowing that you would turn it down, or do you think they genuinely wanted you to proverbially eat it to stay on board?
AS: "I don't think it really mattered to them. It doesn't matter because we've done very well to this point and they were more concerned about how much I was making, instead of looking at it for what it is, the more I make the more you make. I think at this stage of it, obviously he's at the tail end of his career, at the end of it and maybe he thinks that anybody could work the corner. It's hard to try to decipher really because I was blindsided. I've had a lot of fighters, but I've would have never expected this from this kid, never!"
GL: Do you think GGG considers himself a finished product so it's about whatever capable trainer he could get to take it for the least amount money is at this point?
AS: "Rationalizing it, we were more like a family these last nine years and if you don't pay it to your coach you're going to pay it to Uncle Sam. I was honestly blindsided and in this business, and you know it well, the one who spends the most time with the athlete is the only one on the team that isn't protected by a contract, and that's the coach."
GL: What were you looking for in the counter proposal that you sent them?
AS: "I was asking for a little less than half of what I was making before. I thought that I put too much time in, I put too much effort in, I've sacrificed a lot for this young man and I didn't want that tarnished. I honestly didn't want him to get the bad press that I'm reading right now, I didn't want that."
GL: You used the word family, I imagine the emotional investment you've put in makes this a very difficult situation. I imagine you were looked at as some sort of figure, a big brother, an uncle figure.
AS: "He looked to me as a father figure because his father died four or five years ago. I was kind of like the older, wiser fellow in his life. Of all the fighters I've been around I never expected it from this kid. We've had so many conversations about what other fighters were doing and how he would never do things like this because his team and his family were the most important thing in his life, I really never expected this.
(Editors Note: This is a very emotional moment for Sanchez and you could feel his hurt through the phone and we cut the interview off at this point.)

Surprising news. They always seemed pretty close but that's boxing I suppose.

Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
Really sad to see. Reminds me of Hatton & Billy Graham.
I guess it’s easy for us to say money would never ruin our relationships but when it’s those sorts of figures who really knows how they would react.
I’m no expert in tax but Sanchez makes a good point in that even if he hires a coach for peanuts, that’s less tax deductions so he’ll pay more in tax anyway.

Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
Mo money Mo problems, happens all too often.
Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
And Naz before him, and McGuigan before him.
It's not uncommon - boxers don't mind paying 10% when they are getting purses of a couple of grand but if they hit the big money they want to pay a flat-fee.
I can see it from both sides - paying your trainer $10m is a lot of money.
Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
I guess if he was getting say 10% before then he wanted just under 5% of the $100m deal - still nearly $5 mil
I agree that on the one hand he is releasing personal details, but being more vague on some of those details.
Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
A trainer taking a percentage of a fighters purse is a little bit odd IMO, standard practice in boxing i know, but still, an odd one. Maybe this works at the lower level, lower pay scale, but when the big money rolls in, i'm not surprised it causes issues.
Golovkin was a tremendous amatuer with a record of 345-5 and a string of accolades, and in the pro's he was already 23-0 when he went to the states and teamed up with Abel. Abel did not make Golovkin, no way, no how.
Golovkin signs a 100 million, 6 fight deal with Dazn to end out his career. Who honestly feels Abel deserves 10 million of that purse? Or 1.6 milion per fight? So apparantly Golovkin offered him circa 2 million, circa 330k per fight. I think that is pretty fair IMO.
If i was Golovkin, i would rather share that money with my family than Abel. Sure he should pay his trainer, 330k a fight seems pretty god damn good money IMO, and i am sure he will find plenty of takers for that.

Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
Exactly what I was proposing in a previous purse. The % may have been brought down, but the money probably wasn't. Hard to imagine walking away from 330k per fight.ALI wrote: ↑25 Apr 2019, 12:39 A trainer taking a percentage of a fighters purse is a little bit odd IMO, standard practice in boxing i know, but still, an odd one. Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
Sanchez is the greedy fck imo.
No trainer is worth £10 mill for these fights.
Percentage has to go once you are on these figures. Anything thing papa Mayweather got £25mill for the Pac fight?!

Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
is ggg really is getting 100m for 6 fights then having sanchez at 2 percent basically just leaves him around what he was usually making before at 10 percent. i mean im not going to be outraged at a trainer 'only' making 335k per fight

Good, not a bad move at all imo
Didn't overly rate sanchez' work tbh

Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
I don’t see it the same as most of you. He should still be on 10% IMO.
Ok GGG is getting millions and the trainer has had a big input in getting him there. Trainer was taking 10% of the smaller purses and now GGG has hit the big time he has dropped him.
Same thing happens with golfers caddies. They get a % of winnings. Still have to walk the same distance for a beginner player as they do for Tiger Woods.
Everyone in his team that has helped him get where he is should benefit from the big purses IMO

Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
I dont see Gennady having 6 more fights tbh and that's maybe the root of Abels beef.
Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
Abel got Golovkin when he was a 23-0 pro, just as he was blowing up. He was not there from the start, nor was he there from the next to nothing purses.cutsman wrote: ↑25 Apr 2019, 15:01 I don’t see it the same as most of you. He should still be on 10% IMO.

Golovkin offered him good money now, he should have realised he is not worth more than this and accepted the deal.
Your golf caddy theory is laughable.
Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
Golovkins brain scans have already caused some concerns in some countries, he wont have 6 more fights. Yes he is fantastic but he cant keep getting hit like he does and walk away healthily. brain tissue does not repair itself, regardless.
in terms of percentages that trainers get paid.......its not uncommon for trainers to accept 3% when a fighter hits the big time. Therefore just below 5% is reasonable for sanchez. he may well have been instrumental in taking GGG as far as he has but GGG has made Sanchez a multi millionaire already. remember, GGG has not just hit the big time, he has been taking huge purses for a few years now.
Remember......forget sentiment..........the fighter hires the trainer........end of.

Re: Golovkin Leaves Sanchez
I didn't think GGG had shipped that many punches in his career. The two Canelo fights and the Jacobs fight were tough but he pretty much steamrollered everyone else
