Marcos Maidana Says He is No Longer Coming Back To Boxing

ormer two division world champion Marcos "Chino" Maidana has been flipping back and forth, between coming back to the ring and staying in retirement.

Two months ago, Maidana, 35-years-old, announced that he was returning to the ring and signed a multi-fight agreement under the Premier Boxing Champions banner.

Maidana flew to Las Vegas and was working hard with strength and conditioning coach Alexa Ariza.

After gaining a lot of weight during his retirement, Maidana was able to shed around 44-pounds in the weeks of work - and he was planning to have at least three fights in 2019.

After two months of working hard and sharpening up his reflexes, it appeared that Maidana was actually serious about his return.

But for whatever reason Maidana interrupted the training camp he was doing in Las Vegas, and arrived back in Argentina and told local reporters that he will not return to boxing.

The fighter from Santa Fe arrived to the International Airport of Ezeiza and confided briefly to the local affiliate of Fox Sports, stating: "I'm retired from boxing. It's not that I don't feel capable, but there were things that were not right and I have decided not to come back."

Yes, athletes can feel it when the good has gone. No one over 35 wins anything in track and field and Maidana's action packed style is not conducive to longevity.

Someone like Fury on the other hand could probably keep running around the ring til he's 40+ / or his legs don't give in - with a bit of boxing thrown in.

Seems like he was concerned about some of the contract specifics. First fight was signed to be in August with no extension of time. He said that after sparring he did not like how he felt and was worried about not being ready on time. He had a long way to go with not enough time. His contract was for 3 fights but a loss in the first fight would end it. Had to win the second one to have the third one. Perhaps with a different deal he will still consider a come back.

Maidana-Santana Was Eyed For 7/20, Before Maidana KO'd Return

Sources in Argentina indicate to BS.com that former two division champion Marcos Maidana was being positioned to face rugged welterweight contender Francisco Santana (25-7-1, 12 KOs).

The fight would have been the first bout in the planned comeback of Maidana, who has been inactive since September of 2014, when the Argentinean boxer lost a twelve round unanimous decision in his rematch with Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Maidana-Santana was going to be steered for the date of July 20th, as part of the undercard to the planned pay-per-view bout between Manny Pacquiao and Keith Thurman.

As part of his return, Maidana had signed a multi-fight agreement with Premier Boxing Champions - with an eye of their top welterweight names.

Maidana indicates that he lost his desire to return.

"I'm not going to return to the ring, I'm not going to fight again. I lost my enthusiasm. Besides the physical aspect, there were some problems with the company that I signed the contract with, as there were items that were not complied with. The decision is made [not to fight again] and I think there will be no going back," Maidana said.

Sources reveal that Maidana had received several monetary advances to assist him with any comeback expenses, include an advance on the day he returned to Argentina. However, Maidana was pushing for a larger advance - but there was always a fear that Maidana would lose his desire to return and fly right back to Argentina - which he did.

Marcos Maidana Admits Money Was Cause To Kill Comeback

BS.com reported that Maidana received several financial advances to assist him with his comeback expenses, but there was a disagreement when Maidana began pushing for a much bigger advances of money.

And Maidana now admits money was the root cause of his decision to remain in retirement.

"Yes, it's [my decision is due to] economics. Training expenses, and those things. It wasn't [something agreed upon] in the contract, but it was verbal. They said they were going to take care of things.. training expenses, vitamins, etc., and I'm taking care of it out of my pocket," Maidana told Popular.

"They deposited something ... They gave me $10,000 once ... After others ... another 10, I think. It was $30,000 [in total] I think, and then they gave me another deposit, but I do not know how much. I did not notice. But $150,000 was what they had told me they were going to give me. And while I do not need money, what I am most worried about is a person [giving me their] word. I also have to pay my people, my coaches, physical trainer, everything. And I'm putting it out of my pocket."

There were concerns on the PBC side, that Maidana was not serious about his return and would potentially take his large advance and just return to Argentina.

"Yeah sure, its OK. They sure thought that. It is true. But for that reason, if there is no confidence, I prefer to leave everything as it is," Maidana said.

"I like the sacrifice. I do not need money. It all started as a game with those statements I made about going after Mayweather. But then it was serious. And there were $15 million dollars in total and the possibility of fighting against Pacquiao, that was what I liked. What really tempted me was the sporting challenge against Pacquiao, that's why I accepted."

Sounds like if things can be worked out, Maidana will once again return.

He should have known better than to enter into any term agreement based on a verbal contract. He's been around the fight game for a while.

Get it in writing. That can be enforced in any civil suit. A verbal agreement is binding too, but much much more difficult to prove.
