REPORT: Kownacki vs Helenius Summer

Post by oogiebe »

"When the Jarrell Miller mess went down last week, PBC heavyweight Adam Kownacki was one of the first names mentioned to replace “Big Baby” against Anthony Joshua on June 1 at Madison Square Garden.

Kownacki is unbeaten (19-0, 15 KO), has an entertaining style, and is popular in the New York area, fighting out of Brooklyn with Polish roots.

But the 30-year-old contender quickly took himself out of the discussion, and there was word that he’s near the head of the line to face WBC titleholder Deontay Wilder, also a PBC fighter, at some point in the relatively near future, though not next.

Kownacki himself said he’d be back in the ring in “mid-summer,” and it looks like we might know his opponent, as Mike Coppinger is reporting that Kownacki will face faded former European champion Robert Helenius in his next outing."

Not a very exciting fight. Another "W" for Kownacki on his road to a title shot.

helenius is pretty middling (though so is kownacki imo) but honestly there arent many guys in the division putting together a better run then kownacki if he wins this

szpilka
martin
washington
helenius

3 of those guys already got title shots too

the top 5-10 fighters almost never fight each other. usually it's a top 5-10 contender fighting top 20-30 opponents until he gets a title shot. it's depressing. the top 5-10 fighters fighting each other usually are the most entertaining fights.

If Helenius is ready, it can develop to a good scrap. If Helenius isn't ready, Kownacki will maul him down.

as mediocre as helly is , kownacki is a guy who had a hospital sending war vs kiladze and a super close fight with martin, it could be a fight. hopefully helenius gives more effort then he did vs whyte

Helenium was ready about four years ago, I don’t think he comes with either much ambition or ability to win a meaningful fight these days...

Apologies, didn’t realise he had fought Teper last, I thought his two most recent fights were when he struggled past that journeyman...

to be fair, we still don't know how good/bad Martin really is. Kiladze landed much on Kownacki but he's a different fighter than Helenius, he relied on speed and footwork, Kownacki destroyed Szpilka and Washington, not defeated, he destroyed them, if he would destroy Helenius too it would already mean something. I would really like to see how Wilder deals with Kownacki's pressure and volume of punches in the first rounds. and Kowancki vs Martin wasn't that close imo, Kownacki won the first 5 rounds, judges had it 96-94 but to me it was a clear 97-93, close but not razor close.

I like watching Kownacki fight, he’s entertaining.

Serious question though. What would be tougher for him, Helenius or running 5 miles in less than an hour?

I am not trying to be a smart aleck here or anything, but do you know him/his training regiment?

I find it hard to believe he does any kind of serious roadwork.

Well, we know for sure he eats a lot!

I’m sure it’s possible, and he certainly has an incredible ring work rate, but I am just curious about his cardio training.

i think his training regiment is not good. before his fight vs Szpilka, he spent some time on a camp in Poland with Adamek and his post-Bloodworth trainers, and he looked very good in that fight and he was like 17-18lbs lighter than in his next bouts vs Washington or Martin. so his training regiment in USA is probably not great + he eats too much, especially too much cakes as he admits.

Helenius can be a decent fight for a lot of the guys at hw. Just wasn’t up to it against Whyte that’s all.

I agree. People forget this. He's no world beater but he's respectable. He's shared the ring with a few top 25~ fighters and has only lost twice, going the distance with Whyte in the process. He beats all of Kownacki's previous opponent's in my opinion.

I hope his dietary habits don’t ruin him. I’d like to see him do really well.
