Yeh, these two just taught people how you can die in the ring. There has been many toe-to-toe scraps since.. Hardly get mentioned.

It gets mentioned among the greatest trilogies when it had 1 great fight. Hardly ever anything great now.

I think some fights are more talked about than others; usually because of the fight's importance. That doesn't mean the fight itself wasn't that good.
Foreman-Ali was a great fight; one of the best in heavyweight history. Leonard-Hagler was a good fight; not as good as it would have been a few years earlier but great none the less. Still, Leonard surprised a lot of people by how ell he did after the layoff.

Gatti-Ward lacked the skill of great fighters. However, you had two roughly even good fighters giving their all. There was a tremendous amount of action.
Hagler-Hearns was awesome for three rounds. Probably more action in that than in a typical 10-round fight. But it only went 3 rounds, which makes it hard to rate.

This doesn't mean that there weren't other fights as good that aren't talked about as much; some of who have been mentioned.

Whenever Chacon is mentioned, people automatically go Chacon-Limon, which was obviously a great fight. I always try to get people to watch Chacon-Boza-Edwards II. It was a tremendous fight that rarely gets mentioned.
Young-Norton almost never gets mentioned. It was a great fight.

Overrated:
The whole Gatti vs Ward trilogy was a useless bloodbath, good for sadistic cheerleaders getting morbidly horny on machos just taking too much punishment from each other.

Underrated
I liked the Mayweather vs Mosley fight, but I've never heard or read about people praising that fight: the technical rate was very high, Mosley's composure was still amazing, and both fighters were very fit, despite being both past their prime.
Mayweather Jr., Marciano and Calzaghe are the most underrated boxers I've ever known about, so I guess that, at least some of their fights, could be underrated...

Good shout with Nunn v Toney it was a cracker and was looking like one of Nunns best showings for a few years.

All fight fans should find the sheer will shown by both fighters in Gatti/Ward I remarkable. No it wasn't a technically rich event, but it is also a part of the sport. Just as a note...training, to me, is more about the ability of the body and head to take those kinds of shots and still function. I appreciate the hard work both guys must've done to prepare. I was personally amazed that two individuals could go that long the way they did and not collapse, if not for the shots they took, but for the sheer number of punches thrown. The other two fights sucked.

Wasn't that a weird stoppage? Echols getting knocked down several times and Brewer still on his feet when the fight was stopped?
Yeah it was
I actually just youtubed it. INSANE! The fight was "all over the place." Horrible stoppage though.

Eubank v Benn 2 was a huge TV and stadium fight in the UK but was not a notably great watch.......

........partly because the first collision had set the bar so high but also due to Benn and Eubank having grown older-wiser and knowing what serious damage they could do to each other. It never caught fire despite the bitter rivalry, titles and hype.

Yeah, Benn had started his low ducking style which didn’t help.

The Gatti-Ward trilogy is the most overrated series of fights of all time. People want to believe those are great fights so they see it that way but outside of a few rounds Gatti controlled those fights fairly easily (as most people with a modicum of class did to Ward).

I feel more or less the same about that. Not the kind of boxing I like.

Overrated: 1) Any fight involving Ricky Hatton. 2) Holmes-Norton. 3) Gatti-Ward II and III.
Underrated: 1) Patterson-Chuvalo. 2) Moore-Durelle I. 3) Lalonde-Hamsho.

Not a huge fight, but a big one, as it's a European title (if EU championship is not considered as "great", I apologise).
Two Italians (Bundu was born in Africa by Italian mother, and is an Italian citizen) going at it for the EU welterweight title: above that there's only a World-title.

Both boxers can't afford boxing for a living, and have double-jobs, so they lack a Rocky Marciano-conditioning... but the technical rate is world-class, and both fighters show a lot of heart, so, just in case you underestimated Italian boxers, here's a little treat for you...
Bundu vs Petrucci (2011):

P.S.: both boxers had met each other months earlier, ending in a draw: Bundu went on to fight for a World-WBA-interim-title, losing by UD to Keith Thurman.

Tyson/Holyfield, even though you know the result now you can still watch it and feel that feeling of "oh ok this is not going the way most people expected". I mean, prior to the fight people were literally saying in the boxing press "Holyfield might die in there" because he had looked really poor in the 2-3 fights prior to this. Tyson had been bowling through DK stiffs to the point that he didn't even need to land to knock someone out. I watched it live, it was great watching it unfold. That first right hand from Tyson that knocked Holyfield about 2 steps sideways but didn't phase him, you kinda knew it wasn't going to be an early night. Reg called it the biggest upset in the game bar none, that's possibly stretching it for all-time but it was certainly the biggest in recent history.

That Brewer brawl reminds me of the Liles/Littles rematch on a Hamed UC in Newcastle, it was wild:

Another fight that gets overlooked is the Gatti/Ruelas brawl, it had a bit of everything:

I enjoyed Liles vs Littles: both powerful fighters, fought openly: tense, eventful bout.
I usually enjoy closer decisions, but it's good entertainment nevertheless.

I don't think I've heard anyone call a Barton fight great. Floyd, tszyu and lazcano were all pretty good.

the first fight was awesome. depicting that as overrated or even not a great fight is going too far. the second and third were overrated but no way was the first
