Chavez Jr. Eyes Return on June 22, Vows 'Serious' Approach

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

After two years of inactivity, former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is planning to return on a tentative date of June 22.

The last time Chavez Jr. saw action, he was dominated over twelve rounds by Canelo Alvarez back in May of 2016, at a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds.

"I've been out of boxing for two years, I've seen boxing from the inside and from the outside, I'll have another chance, but I have to take things seriously, there can be no more carelessness, I'm no longer a young man where I can do things that I should not do. I have faith that if I come back strong I will soon get a big fight," said Chavez Jr.

In this sense, the Son of the Legend pointed out that beyond thinking about shutting mouths in his return, he now feels renewed and with the firm desire to show that at 33 he is at his peak, both physically and mentally.

"I know I can give more, I have to prove it to myself. Now I see things from another angle, being without activity for two years made me think otherwise, what happened I already assimilated the past... we have to work hard again to take myself to the level that I had at one time and it led me to be the world champion," he said.

For now, he has been training for several weeks in Tijuana, along with the well-known coach Rómulo Quirarte, with whom he worked with a few years ago.

"I am in a stage of maturity, being realistic I have to fight three times this year. My return is scheduled on June 22, we are still looking for the opponent, but we are looking ahead, I do not want my career to go away. I'm at the right time to come back with everything. Physically, I feel better. If I train well, I think I have everything to be a world champion again, it's all about disciplining myself, taking things seriously and that's what I'm doing now," Chavez Jr. said.

Ignore all the words. It's just empty press banter. What he's really saying is "I'm sure being my father's son will get me AT LEAST one more payday. I gotta find out"

I mean he's made plenty of his own money, whether or not he pissed it away I'm not sure, but he's made plenty of coin in his own right.

Drugs must have gotten pretty expensive in Mexico.

Imo he only made the money he did because of his name, if he was call Lee Smith he would be selling kebabs from a truck to make ends meat.

Junior has been promising a return since the fall of 2017.

Nothing ever pans out. Proposed bouts with Angulo,, Martinez and Mora never caught fire.

I believe that Chavez was also in a Mexico rehab facility last year, explaining where he disappears to.

Unlikely that we'll see him in just 8 weeks, unless the opponent is on the same level as the current version of Mayorga.

Maybe the whole boxing thing was a mistake.

How the hell was he ever going to climb that mountain?

Born to lose.

I agree with you for the most part, but he did beat a few decent guys so it's not like he's just completely not talented at all, he just doesn't have the desire or discipline to consistently get the best out of himself.

Basically his heart just ain't in the fight game all the way.

Does "Serious" mean that he switches from weed to cocaine?

Chavez doesn't interest me at all! He's a waste of a talent and probably overrated...

So does that mean that Julio is fighting this Saturday?

Does he have a "serious" opponent lined up yet?

I know.

So it's time for Junior to buckle down.

He's` not a kid anymore. Before you know it, JCC Jr. will be as old as his papá.

He better start making up for lost time.

There was once a time where I used to be hugely impressed by Chavez Jr’s talents, especially after his demolition of Andy Lee, but he didn’t live the life of an athlete and at some stage of his career, he seemed to just stop trying, culminating in his utterly diabolical efforts against the likes of Martinez, Fonfara and Canelo.

I can’t help thinking that Julio’s motivation for continuing his failing career is due to financial reasons. And if this is the case, then I expect one of the sports’ big names to be willing to grant him one final opportunity to engage in a marquee bout, because the lure of receiving a huge payday to face an easy opponent like Chavez Jr. is likely to be far too tempting to turn down.

I think he made the effort against Martinez.

He was just hugely outclassed for 11 rounds.

But Chavez came close to pulling it out in a memorable round 12. If he wasn't trying to win, I doubt he would have accomplished even that.

The Fonfara and Canelo bouts were undoubtedly nothing more than go-through-the-motions efforts that were simply financially motivated farces.

Whether his name alone can any longer offer an opponent the opportunity for a sizeable paycheck, is now questionable.

Junior isn't even a very popular figure in Mexico these days. If his countrymen have practically abandoned him, who else would be eager to watch him?
