Human Capabilities

Post by HomicideHenry »

What is the greatest disparity you can think of between two fighters, in terms of size and/or experience and yet the smaller and/or less experienced man came out on top?

In the early eras it was pretty common to see very small men fight heavyweights. I'm racking my brain trying to think if there was anyone under lightweight to fight heavyweights.

James Robertson Cooper Vs Woolf Bendoff was pretty ridiculous. Cooper being way smaller and decently older.

Torpedo Billy Murphy, at 117Ibs KOed a 13 stone Maori, but probably not one with any boxing experience.

For experience, Jimmy Britt's first fight with Gans is pretty insane, hard to tell what to make of it though

I might not be replying directly to your question but lightweifgt Greg Haugen beat several HWs during the Alaskan Tough Man competitions he won.

That's pretty interesting actually. Once upon a time the Toughman contests were openweight matches. Anyone could fight anyone--- in the same vein as the old carnival booth shows.

Jimmy Wilde, before turning professional, allegedly kayoed men who spotted him by 100 pounds on a number of occasions. Then again, he had the training and was constantly in shape, whereas the common ordinary man doesn't have the ring smarts or the physical conditioning to fight properly so context is king.

Just goes to prove that size doesn't equal fighting ability. I've seen a girl knock a guy out in a bar, she was half his size and numerous examples on youtube where a big buy gets flattened by a little bloke. If you can fight and the other one can't then size rarely matters.

Look up Joe Walcott (not Jersey Joe) the original one "The Barbados Demon" he was known for having some very impressive wins despite being pretty small in stature. Only 5'1 and usually weighing around the Welterweight limit. He has a KO victory over Joe Choynski who only a few fights later would knock out Jack Johnson (yes THAT Jack Johnson). Granted Johnson was very early into his pro career, but nevertheless that's a notable achievement.
