According to The Philippine Star, IBF super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas is set to make the seventh defense of his title against mandatory challenger Ryuichi Funai of Japan.

The paper notes that Ancajas vs. Funai is likely heading to the undercard of either the upcoming defense of WBA lightweight titlist Vasiliy Lomachenko or WBO welterweight ruler Terence Crawford.

Ancajas' matchmaker Sean Gibbons is looking to finalize the details of the bout in the coming days.

Gibbons reveals that he was trying to make a unification between Ancajas and WBC counterpart Srisaket Sor Rungvisai - but the contest fell out when promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport offered a high purse to Sor Rungvisai to face Juan Francisco Estrada in a rematch on the streaming service DAZN.

Funai, 33, has never fought outside of Japan. He has a 31-7 record, with 22 KOs and has won his last seven outings, six by knockout.

I know Yafai is now thinking about Chocolatito in the UK and we’ve had Matchroom USA link with DAZN since.

Jerwin Ancajas entered his seventh title defense with every intention of improving on his dismal showing in his last outing.

The defending super flyweight titlist accomplished that goal and then some, power punching his way to a 7th stoppage of Ryuichi Funai in their ESPN-televised bout Saturday evening at Stockton Arena in Stockton, California.

Six rounds of punishment absorbed by Japan’s Funai was enough for the ringside physician, whom ordered the referee to stop the contest at 0:01 of round seven.

Ancajas (31-1-2, 21KOs) looked remarkably better than in his 12-round draw with Alejandro Santiago in his prior ring appearance last September in Fresno, Calif. In Funai (31-8), he found a much more favorable style matchup.

“This is the fight I owed to all of my fans back home in the Philippines,” Ancajas told ESPN’s Bernardo Osuna after the bout.

Ancajas doesn’t want unifications. He talked about them, but ESPN/Arum want him to just defend the belt he has.

He was supposed to unify with Kal Yafai. I know, not the biggest unification, but still 2 decent beltholders unifying.

Ancajas always fails to overwhelm or excite me.

He gets promoted (primarily by hype-driven ESPN, natch) as the Next Pacquiao.

The only similarity that they're both Filipino. Ancajas can lose his title at any time. Fortunately, for him, his lot of challengers have been pretty ordinary.
