I think Johnson is a far superior fighter to Lacy, especially in terms of technique... its just a question of how much he's slipped... Calzaghe will be too fast and young for him but it could still be a tough fight for Joe especially if he injures his hand again...

Joe must have been in the gym for at least a month... and Johnson won't have been as his fight with Woods wasn't arranged yet... and therefore no southpaw sparring for Johnson... unless he was getting £1millions he'd be mad to fight JC on six weeks notice

He'll be poorly prepared as well.

it was on secondsout before anywhere else. johnson's manager henry foster told secondsout, around last week
Henry Foster is one of the few people in Boxing who doesnt have horseshit for a vocabulary.

As for Warren being an expert at annoucing an opponent late, to make sure they are ill prepared means nothing.

Any manager worth his salt would have his international class 168 - 175 fighter training just in case he is called up for Calzaghe. I dont care what anyone says.

As for Johnson, this is a man who struggled with Clinton Woods.

Calzaghe will box his ears off.
yeah, and look at woods now. he's got a better set of tools than any of those light heavies out there, look at his last 3 fights. and he will pose calzaghe big problems, the way woods is now. but yes, Gj struggled with a Woods who hadn't become world class yet in the 1st fight, but won the 2nd big.

Give Johnson his dues, he really beat J Gonzalez, he beat Harding when he wasn't supposed to, gave Ottke a very near miss, chopped down Ulrich in Germany, had Jones quivering (Jones coming off the Tarver Ko but still a big fave) & split two fights with Tarver whifch isn't so bad. Even the Woods fights look better for Johnson now

he hasn't got lacy's venom, or his forceful glue you to the ropes and blast away mentality (where lacy can throw fast combos). he is as slow as lacy, probably slower even on his best night. and he doesn't have lacy's stamina. however, he's extremely hard headed, knows how to pace himself, cuts off the ring efficiently. i think a flurry fighter like calzaghe would be trouble for johnson, not only that, but it's coming from the leftie stance and harder to see coming/react to

Because Beyer is a zero risk fight for Kessler.

Calzaghe is a 50-50 fight on the other hand - Kessler acknowledges that and respect for wanting the fight anyway. Joe should want it too.

absolutely. he was flat in the 2nd tarver fight & said he'd not had the time to get ready. if not poorly prepared then i'd say he won't be 100%. it's a smart move to get him over now.

but i'm going to start agreeing with you on kessler. calzaghe deserves major props for beating lacy but MUST fight kessler. they should forget beyer, as most feel beyer didn't even beat lucas. JC and MK should fight before they both get debilitated by injury

Johnson's not going to price himself out. he knows that he can get major exposure for calzaghe. i would look forward to this fight

beyer is good, but did anyone ever rank him #1 or consider him equal the the #1 guys? no, never. kessler is much better, definitely

I am no grapple fan Paul, I just remembered you had mentioned writing for wrestling mags in an earlier post. As you say, a long term memory is a wonderful thing! :D

I do have a couple of mates who are self-confessed wrestling geeks though – they have been to the past 3 consecutive Wrestlemanias in NY, LA and Chicago respectively… I have got to say I can’t see the attraction myself. If I was gonna spend a grand or so to fly to the states, I would want it to be for a big fight, not for a pre-rehearsed pantomime played out by muscle marys in spandex.

Still, its horses for courses I guess! :D

Johnson is a far more versatile fighter than Lacy, he has a much better defence, more cultured inside work, and also knows how to drag his opponent into his kind of fight. I wouldn't describe either Lacy or Johnson as slow either. I think Johnson will give Calzaghe a hard workout, Johnson won't just stand there getting blasted like Lacy did.

Johnson is a more proven commodity than Kessler and is a bigger man, it is hard to see many tougher opponents out there than Johnson, this is a great fight to follow up Lacy with and it shows a man who is trying to cement a legacy, good stuff . . . if it happens of course.

Wrestling, the Greco Roman kind is pretty awesome to watch, Wrestling, the teenage angst kind, is ridiculous and pretty much takes all credibility away from a poster who writes about fake camp wrestling.

Johnson is a far better fighter technically than Lacy and has fought far better opposition... even if he takes the fight at short notice he won';t be a push over as he's taken fights at short notice with the top guys quite often in the past... Johnson may even be a bit sharper at the lower weight... I think it'll be a far harder fight for Calzaghe than Lacy was.

Johnson would still be a tough fight for Woods... Woods has improved but against opposition a level below Johnson...

Yeah but Woods isn't as good as Joe though.

Joe would beat Johnson pretty clearly but he wouldn't be a statue like Lacy.

Theirs also that Johnson had a close one with Gonzalez.

Where do those stepladders come from? Every time I see a brief clip (and I mean brief) there's a friggin' stepladder in the ring! And they all sound the same...they're like footballers, but with a husky voice.

Well… “scripted” is perhaps a more accurate definition than “fixed”. The later is often used in reference to some sort of “con”. In fairness to the WWE I don’t think they ever go around saying its anything else.

It suffers big time now because there just aren’t the characters there used to be. Of course the fights weren’t genuinely contested, but at least when it was Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant etc it was entertaining (at the time – not by today’s standards).

I agree though it is shite now, and I never watch it. But it is just supposed to be entertainment.
