HOT PROSPECT VERGIL ORTIZ RUNS KO WIN STREAK TO 13-0

Post by Best Coast »

Former world title challenger Mauricio Herrera had never been stopped in 32 bouts but hard-hitting welter prospect Vergil Ortiz demolished the durable veteran "El Maestro" in 3 rounds last night on the undercard of Canelo-Jacobs:

In a dazzling performance, 21-year old welterweight prospect Vergil Ortiz, Jr. (13-0, 13 KOs), took a big step towards graduating to contender status, nearly decapitating the normally durable gatekeeper Mauricio Herrera (24-9, 7 KOs) and earning a stoppage 29 seconds into round three of a scheduled ten round bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Herrera, a former interim WBA super lightweight champion who had never previously been knocked out, appeared to recover for round three but having dropped his opponent, Ortiz appeared to realize Herrera was no match for him and proceeded to brutalize Herrera for the remaining few seconds of the fight. Ortiz stalked Herrera, landing some big punches before the finisher, a big right hook to the jaw that separated Herrera from his senses, not quite knocking him unconscious, but dropping Herrera instantly to the canvas in a crumpled heap. Referee Russell Mora didn’t bother with a count as Herrera’s corner rushed to their fighter to provide attention. The violent end, coupled with Herrera’s solid reputation as a tough out, likely vaults Ortiz into the conversation as one of the best young prospects in the sport.

I have to confess I'd never heard of him but he sure got my attention. He looked extremely impressive and I look forward to watching him again.

Would like to see him in with Chris Algieri.

Ortiz would probably stop Algieri but it might be somewhat of an interesting test.

I agree completely!! I see him as a future world champ, probably starting at 140 pounds since he said after the fight that he wants to return to super lightweight:

Ortiz had only moved up to welterweight as an accommodation to Herrera (24-9, 7 KOs), 38, a former world title challenger from Riverside, California, and looked very strong at the weight. But Ortiz said he planned to return to the junior welterweight division.

"I want to go back to 140 and get that world title," Ortiz said. "There's plenty of champions that I believe I can take on right now, and I hope after this performance everyone believes in that. If they tell me, hey Vergil, fight in a world title fight in two weeks, I'll take it right now."
