What are you saying, that he got to choose his prison????

The mans just been imprisoned, he's as far away from his release date as he can be and already the 'Naz is inside training for a comeback' threads have started

Old news, Naz was transferred to Moorland open prison after spending just one night in the reception area at Doncaster - he never actually went into the Prison.

Mind you, it's usually lying, thieving politicians who get this kind of cushy treatment. At least a former boxer is getting it too.

Naz hasn't got the will to train hard enough to get back into fighting shape, it's all baloney.

Open prisons are generally filled with those who have perpetuated non violent crime. Embezzelers, fraudsters, etc. I guess they put Naz in an open prison as his crime was an accident, that it was unlikely he would try and escape, and that he hasn't got a long criminal record.

Does being fit affect your reflexes? I would have thought not directly, not unless you're killing yourself to make weight, which affects the nerve endings.

The biggest enemy would be that he is now over 30, and reflexes diminish from our peak about 16-18. Fighters with good technique can compensate with good timing and strategy, but Naz has poor technique in any case, and would look like garbage if he ever came back.

It's all moot though, as I think Naz just likes talking about coming back, there's no point coming back now, he'd be done over by someone at domestic level.

Yeah, I think it's more the manner of weight loss that matters. The biggest factor I seem to recall is to do with electrolytes. When you crash diet, to make weight, you lose the salts from the fluid, and the nerve endings don't respond as well, which disrupts reaction time. A slow protracted weight loss programme, shouldn't have an effect on reaction times, well, not as far as I am aware, I'm no nutritional scientist, but from what I've read that's the case.

Interesting, just read an article about how weight loss affects reflexes. It said that restricting your calories (something most fighters have to do to make weight), affected the reflexes dramatically after 5 weeks, and persisted in affecting the reflexes for 2-3 weeks after the cessation of calorie restriction.

If you think about it, in the past, fighters fought often enough that they would probably never be much more than 5 weeks away from a fight, and had less time needed to cut weight. Someone like Hatton, entering the ring some 25-30 lbs below his walking around weight is spending a long time on reduced calorie intake cutting weight.

This is maybe a good explanation for why modern fighters often seem to have only a brief period at their peak.

I'd read many times that Riddick Bowe used to have to lose as much as 40-50 lbs in trianing camp, and often entered fights weight drained. By the time of the 1st Golota fight, he was already washed up.

The heart Bowe showed in both Golota fights was incredible, and ultimately it was that heart which made Golota foul him and panic. Bowe was on wobbly legs every time Golota landed in the 2nd fight, even jabs were knocking him off balance. Bowe refused to quit despite being battered around the ring and Golota got freaked out and to my mind effectively quit by getting himself disqualified.

If you had combined Bowe and Lennox Lewis, I think you would have had a pretty unbeatable heavyweight. Bowe was so good on the inside, and like Lewis, pretty quick for a big man. The Holyfield that Bowe beat in their first fight, I think would have beaten any version of Lewis. Lewis would have found it very difficult to keep Holyfield off him. Look how cautious he was all those years later against a lesser Holyfield.

Having watched the 2nd Bowe v Holy fight, you would have to say Bowe was extremely unlucky. When the fan man came into the ring, he was getting the better of the fight and beginning to dominate when he had to endure a very long break. When the action resumed, the break favoured the smaller man who lost less heat from his system. Bowe was very sluggish when they returned to action.

i wouldn't go that far.

bowe was having a good 7th rd when fanman made his famous entrance. :D he was beginning to rock holy's head back with the jab and getting closer. :box:

beginning to dominate is going overboard though.

i think holyfield's style would have always given lennox problems. the younger holyfield could keep it coming better and had that very good double jab to keep lennox occupied. :box:

lewis would have beaten bowe with his speed and skills i reckon. :TU:

What do you mean behave, Holyfield was past it and well outweighed by Lewis and was still very competitive in their 2nd fight, is it so hard to believe that in his prime Lewis would have had big problems?

Lewis struggled immensely with Mercer, another tough pressure fighter with a Jab, and Holyfield was a far more cultured fighter, and every bit as tough as Mercer.

They two holyfields are so different, almost a different fighter...
The one Lewis fought was a older and slower but a lot stronger, smarter and craftier than the one Bowe fought.... Holyfields chin got better and better....

Nice one James. I've felt for a while Bowe had the winning of that fight pre-fanman. Evander adapted but was still getting out-boxed formy money. Bowe landed cleaner shots, a guy falling on your preggers wife could crimp your flow a little.
Its been ages since i saw the fight but i always had the impression the 21 minute break served as a well earned rest for the out of shape Big Daddy... Bowe benefited more that Holyfield from the rest....
could be wrong, like i say its been 10 years since i watched it

Yes how about some comments on the farce with Calzaghe's next opponent? I seem to recall you were quick to jump on FA and the Hatton's when Hatton didn't have an opponent for his May date yet Collazo was in 7 weeks before the date. Its now 6 weeks until D Day and talk of Johnson but nothing concrete. Whats good for the goose......

I'm not gonna argue :TU:
But its hard being sympathetic to Bowe when he came in so out of shape after two of the worst title defences in modern history

the Holyfield who fought Bowe in 1 and 2, was able to maintain an incredible workrate, no way do I see Lewis coping with someone with the fundamentals of Holy, his workrate and than anvil like chin.

Terrence, actually apparently Bowe had no idea his wife had been hit, his camp didn't tell him as they didn't want him to end up throwing the fight.

What bad luck, to end up landing, of all places, on one of the fighter's wives, I remember someone pounding the guy on the head with one of those massive brick mobile phones, and the next thing he was unconscious and being dragged about like a rag doll.

I felt Bowe had turned a corner in the fight, he started really really quick and was giving Holyfield a brutal lesson, but then Holyfield rallied and worked his way into the fight, then Bowe put more zing into his shots and was really snapping Holyfield's neck back. Holyfield was looking like he was really under the cosh.

Yeah Fan Man took a beating when he landed ring side but what did he honestly expect? A round of applause and a slap on the back.

Bowe's Brooklyn homies gave him there own special kind of welcome...

Fanman is now dead as I understand.

Bennie is the worst of the worst.
