I agree with that. As a big fan of Dillian, I worry for him and probably have a tendency to over estimate the threat, but I do think you're right about Rivas's power, stamina and pressure. You can't tell Whyte he keeps riding his luck though. Even if he knows that he'll keep taking risky fights. It's what I admire him for so I can't complain.

He puts most of his contemporaries to shame, and he is a champion without a belt in my opinion.

All fair points. Povetkin would be a good opponent for the youngsters next year IMHO. A truly great test for them as pov will be a year older and slower, etc, but still bring that savvy into the ring. Maybe Hrgovic latter this year.

Surely BoxRec has got it wrong about Povetkin's fight on the 18th May? There's no undercard and it was only last week when he claimed his elbow hadn't fully-recovered from surgery. He did say he was in training though, but I suspect he's only performing a limited regimen (especially if he hasn't fully-recovered from his injury).

This would be quite interesting actually. Surely the WBC rank based purely on in ring performance, if Dillian was to say do this and post it to social media, would be good to see if they remove his ranking, and their justification for it.

because boxing does not work like that. Every fight is worth a certain amount of money. Hunter will want 20 times more money fighting Povetkin than an opponent he can easily beat. TV companies offer an amount of money to make the card and you can only do your best with the budgets. As soon as someone understands the financial aspects they understand why fighters fight low grade opponents. From a fighters perspective he is a professional and usually has a manager to maximise the business affairs coupled with degree of risk. Every fighter will have other fighters they target and will have a price in mind. Until you have a sanctioning body or government ruling that they abide by a fair rankings system where the boxers ascend or descend by the actual results and it is coupled with staying compliant (not fighting completely unworthy opponents) things won't change because the manager/promoter/fighter want the least risk they can get away with.

The only thing Povetkin can achieve at this point of his career is to continue engaging in low-risk bouts against journeymen whilst waiting to receive a chance to earn a couple of million dollars being used as a stepping-stone or as a big-name stay-busy sacrificial lamb for the likes of Tyson Fury, Dillian Whyte, Oleksandr Usyk and Joe Joyce.

Povetkin will probably refrain from retiring whilst he’s still capable of commanding multi-million-dollar paydays, regardless of whether they’re fights he cannot possibly win.

I’m not completely righting off Povetkin by the way, but I do feel that his best days are behind him and many of his world-rated peers will very likely consider him as being ready-for-the-taking. The same also applies to his fellow veteran, Luis Ortiz.

I think there are a couple more decent paydays available for Povetkin, if he’s managed correctly for the remainder of his career. He’s a name and can be a high-level ‘opponent’ for someone prior to a title shot for example. I wouldn’t mind seeing him against Whyte for example...
