The Explosive Thin Man vs The Hands of Stone: What if...?

Post by elmersalsa »

In 1978, the great Alexis Arguello of Nicaragua, the WBC World Jr Lightweight Champion, and one of the best fighters pound per pound of that year, was supposed to challenge the great Undisputed World Lightweight Champion Roberto Duran of Panama. Duran was supposed to get a $300,000 payday at New York City's Madison Square Gardento defend the crown for the 13th time, but unfortunately, the fight never happened. What do you think of this explosive and intriguing matchup that we missed in the 70s decade? Who wins and why?

Love Arguello but Duran breaks him down and finishes him around 9 or 10 rounds. Arguello's upright style is tailor made for Duran who'd batter him on the inside. Only his toughness and skills allow him to last.

Vilomar Fernandez happened. Duran's versatility would see him through a tough one.

Duran's very last fight at 135 was in January 78, and Arguello didn't really start fighting at LW for 2 more years. Weight wise it may have been a bigger struggle for one guy to go down than for the other to come up.

The plan was fall of 78.

Duran would rough Arguello up, and after a couple of late knockdowns, stop him in the 9th round.

Duran would get to Arguello faster than Pryor did and would avoid the huge shots that Aaron ate. Mid round KO win for Duran.

Roberto too good for Alexis.

IMO he would stop Arguello in midrounds

While I'd pick Duran to win clearly, he'd have to go through a bit of hell. Alexis would be landing a decent amount of shots on him. Probably Duran around 12 or 13 rounds in a fight that's close after 10.
