Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
Bad Left Hook:
Two of the WBA’s four heavyweight belts could be consolidated later this year, as regular champion Mahmoud Charr and interim champion Trevor Bryan are scheduled for a May 17th purse bid in Panama City should they fail to make a deal in the next 10 days. The minimum bid is an eyebrow-raising $1,000,000, split 75-25 between Charr and Bryan.
Charr (31-4, 17 KO) has had a profoundly stupid reign. He hasn’t fought since beating Alexander Ustinov for the vacant belt in 2017, as his mandated defense against Fres Oquendo fell through due to Charr’s failed drug test, then got rebooked when he successfully appealed, then fell through again when Oquendo decided not to sign the fight contract.
"Stupid reign." That about says it.

Re: Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
The timeline of events for the WBA regular world heavyweight championship are riddled with drugs and controversial practices:
• Alexander Povetkin vacates the WBA regular world title, to challenge Wladimir Klitschko, with the Russian subsequently failing multiple drug tests later on his career
• Ruslan Chagaev beats Fres Oquendo in highly-controversial circumstances, to capture the regular vacant version of the WBA's world heavyweight championship, due to the perceived corruption of RUSADA and the WBA
• Fres Oquendo successfully files lawsuits appealing the RUSADA testing protocols failing to adhere to WADA’s rules & the WBA’s misconduct of their handling of his bout against Ruslan Chagaev
• Lucas Browne defeats Ruslan Chagaev to capture the WBA regular world title, but then fails a drug test
• Lucas Browne is reinstated as the WBA’s champion and ordered to defend his title against Fres Oquendo, but the American had to withdraw from the bout due to injury, so he was ordered to face Shannon Briggs instead
• Lucas Browne is then stripped of his WBA regular world title for failing his second drug test within an eight-month period
• The WBA order Shannon Briggs and Fres Oquendo to compete for the vacant WBA regular world title
• Shannon Briggs fails a drug test and the fight is called-off
• Oquendo’s WBA world title bout against Manuel Charr was then called off, due to the German failing a drug test
• Oquendo then rejected a highly-lucrative WBA world title shot against Jarrell Miller, because ‘Big Baby’ didn’t want to undergo VADA testing. Miller then subsequently tested positive at least four times for three different banned substances whilst preparing for the AJ bout
• The WBA then decided to reinstate Manuel Charr as their regular world heavyweight champion, despite failing a drug test
• Fres Oquendo’s reluctance to face a proven drug cheat has cost him his world title shot, which has resulted in Manuel Charr defending his regular WBA title against interim WBA champion, Trevor Bryan.
• For the record, Trevor Bryan earned his shot at the interim WBA strap by defeating two fighters with just FOUR WINS in 48 BOUTS between them.
• Trevor Bryan captured the WBA's vacant interim title by beating BJ Flores, a former cruiserweight contender who was inactive for fourteen months, lost his previous bout at crusierweight and then only managed to subsequently overcome two boxers with 26 losses between them
I know it’s a long post but come on guys!!! WTF is going on with the WBA!!!

Re: Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
Oquendo has been uncharacteristically quiet since that planned autumn fight with Charr predictably fell through.
Hard to believe that he has abandoned his nearly 5 year odyssey to capture the coveted WBA regular title.
Fres must have something up his sleeve.

Re: Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
Oquendo is still number three in the most recent WBA rankings (after Miller's removal and Usyk being parachuted in) so, presumably, he will still get his shot at some stage...

Re: Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
$1m min purse his too high.
I remember no bids were even made for Briggs-Oquendo, they had to come to an arrangement.
If anything I won’t be surprised anyone from the outside bidding $1,000,001 for the bout.
Maybe a promoter who wants the WBA Reg belt? Who knows.

It's an amazing story. Even for us hardened boxing fans used to controversy.
How, or why someone would pay 1M for this crappy matchup is beyond me.

Re: Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
You just know that, should this fight go ahead, the WBA will sanction a bout for the interim title because They Just Can't Help Themselves...

Yeah so they're a bunch of kuntz. Come on EO. Don't make like you didn't knowEnlightened-One wrote: ↑08 May 2019, 10:10 The timeline of events for the WBA regular world heavyweight championship are riddled with drugs and controversial practices:

@ Oogie : whaddya mean 'consolidate the belts'? Gilberto Mendacious didn't get where he is today by consolidating belts, his mission is one of proliferation and dispersion. Are you trying to give the poor man a coronary?
In all seriousness am I the only sad bastard on BoxRec who is quite excited, ok make that interested, to see a fight between Makhmood Charr and Trevor Bryan (not suggesting I expect it to get across the starting line, mind) ?
Yeah I probably am aren't I?
Re: Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
No he didn't! LMAO! And no, I'm not excited about this fight. I'd rather watch the weeds grow in the yard.candyslim wrote: ↑08 May 2019, 17:10 Yeah so they're a bunch of kuntz. Come on EO. Don't make like you didn't know![]()

Thanks Oogie. You were about my last hope. Truly I am a sad bastard. ![[icon_e_sad.gif] :verysad:](./images/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif)
Re: Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
In my defence, what appeals to me isn't the murderous power of two titans facing off in the ring (yes honestly
)
Neither is it the promise of the sparkling cut and thrust of two Masters of the ring putting on the kind of display that would have tears of admiration and wonder coursing down young Senor Pip's cheeks, but rather the simple fact that I wouldn't have a clue who was going to prevail.
Sometimes for me that's just cause enough.

You're better off skipping to the next day highlights. Both are bores in the ring. It will be a "leanfest."candyslim wrote: ↑08 May 2019, 18:04 In my defence, what appeals to me isn't the murderous power of two titans facing off in the ring (yes honestly)

Re: Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
I prefer to remain optimistic (must clean my specs - it's hard to be optimistic with a misty optic). Charr is not a terrible boxer and Trevor Bryan is, for me at least, something of an unknown quantity. I would prefer to see these guys fight each other than either against someone of real quality ... or indeed someone of a complete absence of quality ![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)
Re: Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
Though I dislike his padded record, his promoter and his unnecessary title shot, I hope Bryan wins. If Charr wins we will see a one sided beaten by the next competitor who I imagine will be Joyce. If Bryan wins then we at least know he is better than Charr which would lead to an ever so slightly more interesting fight once this is done.
Re: Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
The mere fact that Oquendo is neither of the fighters is a good sign.
Although a fight of this caliber obviously should not be for a world title at all, I think it is mildly evenly matched. Trevor hasn't done enough to prove that he's definitely on Charr's level, but it's okay. The fact that this fight provides an extremely relevant, even ambitious test for Trevor is a good thing. The fact that the winner of this fight will have more credibility than Charr currently has is also a positive thing.
As a boxing fan, I tend to prefer unpredictable match-ups like this over predictable walkovers like Wilder - Breazeale, Fury - Schwarz, and Joshua - Ruiz.

Re: Charr vs Bryan to go to Purse bids
Well said Lackeos, my sentiments exactly.
Please nobody confuse my low level enthusiasm for this fight with any kind of endorsement for the piece of crap title at stake because I don't give a flying one about that, I'm just looking at it as a fight between two top 15 to 30ish heavyweights, screw the bling.
