A long-discussed unification bout between 147-pound titlists Errol Spence and Shawn Porter will land at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, two sources with intimate knowledge of talks informed BS.com on Wednesday. A firm date has yet been established—as scheduling within Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) has long been fluid—but the bout is being targeted for August 3 atop a free-to-air PBC on Fox telecast.
Fox Sports boxing insider Mike Coppinger was the first to reveal such plans.
Whether the unification clash lands on August 3 or September 1 remains up in the air. BS.com has been able to confirm that the absolutes surrounding the affair are Barclays Center serving as the destination and the contest not airing on Pay-Per-View.

Agreed, marching into that body attack is trouble.
Very good matchup! To me Spence already had begun to outshine his main rival at 147 in Terence Crawford with both of their respective last outings. With a conclusive win here he'll continue to do so because Crawford really has nobody of this caliber at Top Rank to fight with.
If Spence gets a clear win here he's the frontrunner for Fighter of the Year so far, and if he gets another win...any additional win by years end it almost becomes a no brainer.
This fight should answer any unanswered questions on Spence's place in top P4P list. A great scalp in Porter. Spence would wear down a game but outgunned Porter.

Agreed...Spence wins this one by clearcut decision!! Maybe 8 rounds to 4...

you rate beating a lw that high? like it was some big ass win?
Im going with that Spence get a UD with at least 3-5 points. Or he just crushes Porter with beating him down for a bunch of rounds then ends it in like past the midpoint of the fight.
And Porter got a shot. But the odds ain't in his favor. Spence is something special to say the least.
Finally another unification there. Porter will be troublesome, as for all his opponents, but Spence will be enough composed to deal with Porter's pressure. Technically Spence is better. I see Spence outboxing Porter.
Spence does a number on him, not confident he stops him. I thought Garcia could stop Porter but the man refuses to be hurt, he’s a very wilful fighter.

It was a win over a Top 10 P4P guy, and when you combine that with beating another highly touted Titleholder that's a meaningful year. He'd still have time to get another fight in by December maybe.

okay, but p4p means pound for pound . size equal. only has so much application to a lightweight moving up to face a big 147 guy

It's still meaningful to have completely shut out a boxer of that caliber over 12 rounds. In a lot of cases in matchups like these, the lighter fighter is at least competitive against his larger foe. Mikey was completely outmatched in every way. Not just in size, but in skill as well.
size and strength impact everything in a ring. for example if your several inches taller, longer reach, etc....you can stay at distance and jab from range better. if your a much naturally bigger guy and stronger your shots can push a guy off as he tries to get in better. you can discourage him easier.
it still has an impact. i dont buy that spence proved p4p hes leagues above mikey in skill too, you cant just set aside the natural size difference

And a shutout is a shutout. Beating a great fighter isn't insignificant no matter how you wanna slice it. It's not the biggest win of all time or nothing, but it's not meaningless either.

how would you rate jarret hurd shutting out and beating mikey?
Jarrett Hurd is yet another weight class bigger than Mikey, and I don't see any reason at all why Mikey would choose to go that route given his performance against Spence, but it'd be somewhat noteworthy still if Mikey were able to get some notable wins as a Welterweight first.

now i think spence is excellent but honestly just not seeing it as some big time win thats netting him foty stuff. mikeys a 5'6 guy best suited for lw
The Garcia win alone doesn't. The Garcia win combined with a potential Porter win does. This is not complicated. In an era where big stars usually only fight once or twice a year, beating 2 name fighters in a year is meaningful. Particularly when they'd both have to be considered your best wins to date.

i dont rate beating a 5'6 lw as better at all then beating brook. brook was obviouslly a much tougher opponent
he also already beat porter!
Well Porter is at worst his 3rd best opponent, and Garcia is at worst his 2nd best opponent. I don't really see anyone out there who's having a bigger year than Spence do you? Maybe Canelo if he can get another win on par with the Jacobs win by years end.
jamamb wrote: ↑10 May 2019, 19:10
beating jacobs to me is easily more impressive then beating a 5'6 natural lightweight
kell probably wouldve won wide over mikey too, he certainly gave errol a much tougher fight
I agree that beating Jacobs is more impressive than beating Garcia, but it's not more impressive than beating Garcia AND Porter. Canelo needs at least a 2nd solid win to be in the running for FOTY. He'll almost certainly have a bout in September. We'll be hearing an announcement by late June I'd imagine.
