Anyone know what happened with Kenny Bogner?

Post by APerno »

Kenny 'Bang-Bang' Bogner started his career 11-0-1 before losing (quitting with a broken nose) against Livingstone Bramble in summer 1981. He then regrouped and went 11-0 in his next eleven fights, he beat a 34-1 Gonzalo Montellano (UD 10), a 28-3 Louis Hubela (TKO 6), and ended with a 15-1 Edwin Curet (TD 9). (Not a bad resume 22-1-1; with the one loss being to a current champion.)

So what happens next? He disappears.

He mades a comeback four years later; 4 comeback fights between '87 and '93 but they didn't mean much; mean anything.

What happened to him after the Curet fight? There was no reason for him to quit career wise: it was January 1984, Bramble would be the WBA champ by summer and a rematch with Bramble wasn't unreasonable, (in fact Curet got a non-title fight with Bramble that October), plus there were several other top names in the LWs at that time (it was a deep division in the eighties) but after beating Curet, he just disappears. Anyone know why? Is the TD with Curet relevant somehow? Is there a why?

He broke his nose after the Curet win and was out for some months and was then lined up to fight Bramble again but it was cancelled. Then he was lined up to fight Camacho but that fell through. He became disillusioned with the sport and embroiled in a legal battle which kept him out the ring in 1985 and 1986 so by the time he fought again it was 3.5 years later and he just wasn't the same fighter anymore.

Thanks - the broken nose (head butt?) caused the TD with Curet I suppose. - I saw the Bramble-Bogner fight on ESPN back in '81; Bramble looked great - 2 1/2 years later I knew he would take Mancini. Always thought Bogner would be back though. - Thanks again.

No worries. He went into the Bramble fight with a broken nose and basically quit as he couldn't take the pain anymore. He had another broken nose in the Curet fight but also a cut, not sure why it was a TD though.

Kenny Bogner developed a serious drug problem early in his career. As he moved up boxing's ratings ladder, and started making a few bucks, he developed an unhealthy taste for (crack) cocaine. In the "missing years" referred to above, (for at least 2 of those years) he was incarcerated at the Youth Reception and Correction Center, in Yardville, New Jersey. This is fact; I WAS THERE WITH HIM, until late 1988, when I was released. Could be mistaken, but I believe he actually served more than just 2 years on that sentence. If my memory serves me, he was 1- already on felony drug probation when he was arrested and convicted for a new drug charge; OR : 2- Was given probation as a first offender, and then violated the terms by using crack cocaine. (testing dirty for parole officer) Pretty sure it was one or the other. Anyway, although I can't remember exact details from so long ago, this IS first hand info. Though we were not in the same housing unit, I talked to him frequently, in the Gym, Courtyard, Big Yard..etc..
It was a shame; I mean it. Kenny Bogner was a VERY nice guy ! Very respectful; great sense of humor. I believe he was already signed to a six figure contract with Ray Mancini, before the Yardville incarceration. That sentence cost him; big time ! He WAS working out religiously while there, getting back into fighting shape. I hope things got better for him down the road.
