Chicago Boxing

Post by Simonpure »

Rather than continue the thread "To Crooked Nose From Simonpure", which was only a means of letting off steam and a tip of the hat to Crooked Nose, this is a fresh start. Hopefully, there will be other contributors who share my interest in Chicago Boxing. If not, I have my Ring Record Books.

In my own hayday as a fan in Chicago (1948-1958) there were over 400 professional boxers in a city which offered, for one period, eight fight cards weekly at seven different venues....as well as boxing in South Bend, Gary and Michigan City, Indiana, Benton Harbor, Michigan, and Rockford, Illinois.

To accommodate so many professional boxers there were gyms throughout the area. The best known of these was the Spunt brothers Ringside Gym in the loop, where country boys like myself could come into city, watch the pros and then adjourn to Minsky's Burlesque to check out the owner's wife, Lili St. Cyr.

Other well used facilities were the Mid-West Gym near the old Stadium, also operated or fronted by Danny and Sammy Spunt. Johnny Coulon's gym on the south side was a mecca for boxers on the road such as Robinson, Costner, Ike Williams and Gene Burton.

Former lightweight champion Sammy Mandell had a gymnasium in Melrose Park which was home for many top amatures and beginning pros who lived on the west side.

What seems strange now is that with all that activity, I can't even name ten boxers who ever achieved national ranking let alone win a championship. The only ones that I can remember were Johnny Bratton, Bob Satterfield, John Holman, Spider Webb, Bobby Boyd, Freddy Dawson, Luther Rawlings and Danny Womber. There must have been others but their names escape me. I do, however, remember opening the Ring Magazine each month to check the ratings for the name of a Chicagoland boxer and feeling disappointment and a slight loss of state pride when none was mentioned.

That is not much of a list for a 12-year stretch. So, what were the reasons for so many talented boxers and so little recognition? Mob control? Eastern press? Home cooking? I wish I knew.

I'm with you Simonpure!
Listing any missing Chicago fight I can find, in all my The Ring mags reports, covering 60 years.
Reason why; I dig Chicago Blues, (Willie Dixon)
Beside your RRB's, I'm sure you can find anything about Chicagoland by the state search (history) and find any of the forgotten contenders you may be locking for.
And I repeat my suggestion, You should join the BoxRec editor team!
That's where you can find and show everything the main homepage Forum doesn't expose.
There's a biography section you can only handle as an editor.

Glad we're getting this thread started.
I think Chicago fighters have had a hard time getting national media attention. It always seemed strange with Chicago being such a big market. At least during the era I followed (70s-80s), promotors didn't put on big shows here (with a few exceptions) and homegrown fighters had to go to Vegas or elsewhere to get steady quality fights.

What were some of the popular venues during the 40s and 50s? I know the name Marigold Gardens. Where was that exactly? Was the Aragon a fight venue back in those days? How about the Rainbo at Clark & Lawrence?
I notice on the Satterfield record that he fought LaMotta at Wrigley Field. I didn't know the Friendly Confines was used for fights.

On a 1937 poster on sale at Antiquities of the Prize Ring, http://www.antekprizering.com, the address of the Marigold Gardens is listed as Belmont at Sheffield. By 1950 both the indoor and outdoor arenas were located at Broadway & Grace.

I don't recall the Aragon Ballroom ever being used for professional boxing, but during the eight fight cards per week period mentioned above, both the White City and Roseland ballrooms were turned into boxing venues.

The Rainbo Arena was, as you point out, located on North Clark Street. It always seemed to be an on-again, off-again facility for boxing. Rasslin' made the nut. There were, however, some big names who fought there during the early 1950's....Bratton, Satterfield, Rawlings, etc.

Forgive me for having forgotten Eddie Perkins among the champs and contenders from the Windy City.

The BoxRec database shows that Allen Thomas fought Vincente Rondon in the Aragon Ballroom in 1969. Thomas also boxed there in 1966.

Glad you mentioned Eddie Perkins. Won a title but not really remembered in his hometown. I never saw him fight or read any press about him. Did he stay in Chicago after his career?
Didn't Joe Louis make his pro debut in Chicago, and weren't some of his early bouts here? Would those bouts be at the Marigold or maybe the Coliseum on S. Wabash?
Was the Amphitheater a fight venue back in the 40s-50s? I know some of the bigger shows of the late 70s and early 80s were there (Cuevas-Shields, Frazier-Cummings, Rossman-Capuano).
Old Comiskey hosted some big cards, too. Both Louis and Liston won their titles there.

..the exciting and explosive bob satterfield...whom just about everyone who fought him declares him the hardest puncher ever....twice hauled his 110 pound wife into court....because he said she was physically abusing him!! well....he did have that bad chin.

one of the most colorful fighters ever. i have a couple of stories about him...comments by other fighters....that i think might be worth posting here...which i shall do when i am more awake.

Crooked Nose....Joe Louis did indeed make his professional debut in Chicago at Bacon's Arena scoring a first round knockout over one Jack Kracken on 4 July 1934. During the next five months Louis would fight nine more times in the Windy City and twice in his hometown of Detroit.
He also fought numerous times as an amateur in Chicago both in Golden Gloves and AAU competition. One of his two-time victims was a well known amateur boxer from the area where I grew up by the name of Aldo Stoldatti. Stoldatti, according to local legend went the three round distance in both bouts during the early '30s and later became a well known referee in central Illinois.

As for Bacon's Arena I have seen other references to it but have no idea where it was located or what the facilities were like.

I recall that the International Amphitheater was used frequently during the late 1940's for professional boxing and wrestling. The only fight that I can
remember taking place there was Willie Joyce and Nick Castiglione. Perhaps someone with a complete set of Ring Magazines could add some knowledge here. My only personal experience at the Amphitheater was attending an International Livestock Show on one occasion, spent mostly checking out the local corn fed beauties.

okay...a few satterfield stories i recall. oakland billy smith...an erratic ..sometimes very good lightheavyweight had just scored a knockout over Bob foxworth in cincinnati...it was terrific one and he was booked to fight again in cincinnati. he hopped to chicago to fight bob satterfield in the interim and satterfield knocked him cold in the first round. when smith came back to cincinnati he claimed he got a quick count. a reporter asked how that was possible as he was knocked down twice before the final one . smith said the repprter was nuts...he was knocked down just once..and that was a flash one. the reporter showed him the chicago paper write up of the fight, which smith had never read and he said "I'll be damned. i didn't know about the other two! no wonder foxworth told me not to take that fight!"

ezzard charles was booked to fight satterfield on his way to his first shot at marciano. in the first round ezzard was doing okay until satterfield landed one of his bombs. ezzard held on and used his defensive skills to finish the round...and to stay off the floor. round two..and ezz cold cocked satterfield with one punch and it was over. years later ezz told me he was half out on his feet and the punch was like being hit with a sledge hammer. he said he was determined to knock satterfield out as soon as he could...."i didn't want to be hit like that again. not that night or ever."

i remember watching satterfield against the huge (for the time) nino valdez...215 against satterfield about 180...on tv. the difference in their size made satterfield look like a boy against a man. very early...it may have been in the first round....satterfiled uncorked one....it hit valdez on the FOREHEAD....and a lump the size of a ping pong ball erupted almost immediately. i will never forget the look on valdez's face. his eyes got as big as dinner plates.....it was obvious he had NEVER been hit like that before....and for the rest of the the fight the little guy was chasing the big guy all around the ring. if it hadn't been for the ropes valdez would have backed all the way to his dressing room and satterfield won by a wide decision. i think satterfield had valdez down in a late round. valdez managed to get up....satterfield always lost a lot of power if the fight got past the first few rounds.

one more that comes to mind. whenever the subject of Lamotta's great chin came up, jake always (and may still) said its greatest test was against satterfield. (paraphrased) "I took shots from the hardest banger of all...Bob satterfield. when i gave him the top of my head he actually raised bumps on it. i mean real lumps!! it was like he was hitting me with the ring stool." jake outlasted him and knocked him out in a middle round. but always....not robinson...not anybody else..jake always talked about satterfield first when it came to hard punchers.

satterfiled was one of the most colorful fighters I ever saw. handsome...and well built....and with him it was all or nothing. he was notorious for training in the nightclubs of chicago....and he came in wide open...so that may account for the number of times he got knocked out himself as much as his chin. he could actually box pretty good when he had to, but he never trusted his stamina..so he usually went for a quick finish. his best weight was between 180 and 185....and he fought many of the best heavies and light heavies of his day.

oops..one more..can't remember who..it might have been foxworth who said satterfield's punches "should have been illegal....nobody should be allowed to hit anybody else that hard."

Jaclem....You are the champ!!

Not only great stories about the ol' swing master, Bob Satterfield, but you brought up the long forgotten Bob Foxworth.

Can you imagine a match up between Bob Satterfield and Ken Norton? I saw them both in their prime and would give a slight edge to Satterfield over two or three rounds. Otherwise, who knows?

Is the famed Windy City Gym on the South Side still in use? I understand Clarence Griffin owned it for a time and that Ali trained there. Is that the same Griffin whose son Montell was WBC light-heavy champ in '97. Is it the same gym used in the 1992 film "Gladiator"? If it is in use, who runs it now?

The Windy City Gym is located at 4401 W. Ogden Avenue, 2nd Floor, Chicago, IL 60623-2928.

You can get a glimpse of the facility on http://www.torohernandez.com.

Montell Griffin grew up around Rockford, Illinois, but I don't know if his father ever operated a gym.

Simonpure, do you recall Davey Day? He had a title shot vs. Armstrong in '39. In fact, I remember Ben Bentley introducing Day at fights in the 80s as "the man who had Henry Armstrong beaten for 12 rounds!" Day was kind of the Chicago version of Billy Conn. Always wondered about that fight. No sign that it was filmed. I looked up the story on microfilmed NY Times. Their take was a bit different. They gave Davey credit for staying upright a long time but little else. Can anyone add anything?

The only thing I remember about Davey Day is that my dad used to take me into Day's bar and grill when I was about twelve years old. I know that it was located in the loop and I think was connected with a hotel lobby. Day was never there when we were, in the daytime naturally, but there was a big picture of him behind the bar and the walls were covered with boxing photos. I believe his place was closed or demolished in the late 1960's.

You mentioned Ben Bentley. Didn't he have some position with the old IBC other than ring announcer?

Was the organist Al Malgard still pumping in the 80's?

I think Bentley was mainly a PR man, but also a promoter. I believe he was the promoter of record for the Robinson-LaMotta title bout at the Stadium in '51 and I think he was involved with Chuck Davey's career. Later, he did PR for the Chicago Park District and, of course, was one of the cigar-chomping "Sportswriters" on that radio/TV show.
I never heard of Al Melgard. Was he organist at the Stadium?
I didn't know Davey Day had a bar & grille. I know he was still a fixture at fights into the 80s. He was no longer a lighweight - I recall him as a very stout little guy with a big smile. Time will do that. I remember Nelson Algren describing how cave-chested and bony looking Day looked in his prime. I think Day published an autobiography just before his death (1998?). I faintly recall that his son co-wrote the book. I'd sure like to find a copy.

...in his later years bentley was a fixture at closed circuit fights...which were fairly common then. he was also interviewed on tv sports shows before some of the big fights. i remember his picking cooney to kayo holmes in the first round....."can't see how anybody can stop him"..and his memory played a few tricks. in recalling the robinson/lamotta valentine's day title fight he said "i was sitting in the first row and lamotta knocked robinson down right in the corner in front of me and i didn't think ray was gling to get up...i'll never forget that moment" . it would have been better if he had, as we all know robinson was never down in that fight. my guess is he was thinking about one of their earlier fights , one in which jake did put the sugarman down.

colorful fellow, though, and approachable and friendly...and loved to talk about the "great days" of the game.

Now you guys have brought back my own memory of Ben Bentley. Crooked Nose mentioned that Bentley was involved with Chuck Davey's career. Well, I believe he was also behind the gossip column romance between Davey and "Canada's Sweetheart", ice skater Barbara Ann Scott.
Whether there ever was a romance is uncertain, but their names were linked together in Kup's and Lyons' columns right up to the Gavilan fight.

Al Melgard was the organist at the old Chicago Stadium for several decades and would embellish the fights with his humor and talent. I remember him playing "Oh, Johnny, Oh" whenever Bratton would be at ringside. Of course his rendition of "Good Night Ladies" always added the finishing touch to a knockout. How he ever matched melodies to someone in the audience was a mystery because he was perched about as high and as far from ringside as possible. Perhaps, again, the hand of Ben Bentley.

Never knew there had been boxing at the Rainbo Gardens. Unfortunately the building was torn down in 2004, but I did take several photos of it. The Gardens had quite an interesting history. In addition to being padlocked a few times during Prohibition, it was also the site of John Dillinger's 31st birthday party, and where the Howard brothers discovered Larry Fine, the 3rd Stooge for there act.

Here's a link http://chicago.urban-history.org/ven/dhs/rainbo.shtml but the photo doesn't do the building justice. It was actually quite large.
