Virgil Hunter: Amir Khan Not Training Enough Between Fights
According to Virgil Hunter, the head trainer for former world champion Amir Khan, his boxer does not do enough training between fights and is letting his skills deteriorate
Hunter says his boxer trainers very hard in camp, but he doesn't train enough between fights and becomes very rusty - which creates issues in his fights.
He shakes his head at the suggest that Khan is a fighter on the slide, he simply feels the Bolton boxer is not working enough to keep his skill sharp when fights are not scheduled.
"I would like to see him commit to many training camps in between fights and to work on his weaknesses before he makes that final decision to really see if his skills are gone, or if he is just letting them lay in a pile and deteriorate slowly. He never has practice in between fights. He trains hard for 10 weeks but it's not enough," Hunter told BBC Sport.
"There's little things that he does that cause him to be out of sync. His timing is off. His distance is not where it should be. He doesn't have a sense of range and distance and those things are not due to age. That's from practice. His hand speed is still there but his sense of distance and range is not there and that's what he needs to work on."

He should get a final payday from Kel Brook and pack it in. Granted it doesn't make as much as it would have 2 years ago. Would still be decent though.
He made really good money considering he could never take a punch. So hats off to him but he's done now.

You say he’s done now but the way his ego works, if he beat brook it wouldn’t be a last pay day, he’d be calling out everyone after

Surprisingly Virgil disagrees.
No obvious reason he has for saying that.
I'd still like to see Brook vs Khan.

Hunter is just training Khan for the sweet % cut - can you imagine what the late Emanuel Steward would think of Khan training on and off between fights!

Whereas Eddie Hearn thought going in the Jungle was a great career move.
Re: Virgil Hunter: Amir Khan Not Training Enough Between Fights
After watching Hunter's last boxer (Brazeale) in action, I wonder if he has anything to actually teach
Re: Virgil Hunter: Amir Khan Not Training Enough Between Fights
im not sure how good a trainer he really is, with these big name trainers often time its just a bandwagon effect based on the success on one particular boxer

Khan should dump this overpaid mook. He did Amir no favours with his confused corner advice telling him to quit in the TC fight. If there’s one thing the Bolton man has is a huge heart, and Hunter helped him tarnish that pointlessly.
Re: Virgil Hunter: Amir Khan Not Training Enough Between Fights
I know fighters pulling out when they could have fought on is largely despised by fight fans (and no doubt in my mind Khan could have fought on if he wanted) but like a few others including allegedly, I think the stoppage was right and did Khan a huge favour. He was getting painfully punched around the ring by TC, who is a fast, accurate and powerful puncher. It was only going to get badly worse for Khan and long-term damage in retirement is really not the price to pay for some inane claim to being a tough-guy. Khan can at least live to fight another day.MightyWarrior wrote: ↑25 May 2019, 03:33 Khan should dump this overpaid mook. His bravery is really not in question, and generally those who suggest that a fighter is a coward are often those that have never fought professionally themselves.

I've never fought professionally and am happy to say Khan was a coward versus Crawford. Crawford felt the same. Difficult to imagine a Holyfield or Pacman quitting after getting hit in the leg. Bowe was getting whacked full power in the nads by a hulking brute who was up to his eyeballs in steroids and still he kept getting up to fight on.
As far as Hunter's point, I don't think any amount of training can fix Amir Khan. I like Amir but he's very fragile and extremely dim.

On the subject of trainers I watched this series of The Contender and they had Freddie Roach and Naazim Richardson working the fights and ive gotta say both of their cornerwork was abysmal as was the stuff they were hollering ringside during the rounds although that was more Naz TBF, both of them would say the same old garbage for every fight despite being totally different types of boxers in their corner and the opposing one
I genuinely hear better advice in the corner every week in Britain including undercard action,
