Classic fights I've watched recently

@Handsofstone...….have always felt this was the fight/cheque McCrory had earned back down the line but without being a bona fide threat.

Glenn surely did not make a mint as a world CW champ - even being the owner of a decent strap - and big Len came onto the scene at precisely the right time for Glenn in terms of landing a way to get paid for a hard, good-ish career.

Boxing is full of hard luck stories.....but in this case, McCrory pocketed a tidy 'owing' sum and he's been quite honest in some interviews that it was an impossible job and he wanted to try and stay in there for as long as he could.

Aye he tried his best you could really see him try to suck it up and throw back but Lewis come out quick and hurt him early and it took the fight out of McCrory straight away, tough couple of rounds

Great little scrap, Lopez dealt with Rockys pressure very well for the most part

I watched the first Williams/Sosa last night on a random DVD grab. Brutal, brutal fight. Can't ever recall another fight stopped over mutual brutality.

Lennox Lewis vs Tyrell Biggs



Lewis stops fellow Olympic Gold Medallist Biggs in the 3rd, Biggs showed glimpses of his quality and probably shaded the 2nd on workrate, both men showing solid jabs, Lewis coming over with the right hand occasionally and it was that shot which put Biggs down for the first time in round 3, clubbing right hand sent Biggs down and he only just made the count, when the action resumed Biggs threw a wild left hook which Lewis easily avoided before sending Biggs down again with a chopping right

Biggs got up but Lewis trapped him on the ropes teeing off on him and it was a final right hand which sent Biggs down for a third time as he tried to escape the ropes to end the fight

Tony Lopez - Rocky Lockridge 1

Great little scrap, Lopez dealt with Rockys pressure very well for the most part

Great fight. Thought Lockridge had him, but Lopez hung in there. I had Lockridge winning by a point. Obviously he wasn't going to get the decision.

I wasn't scoring but my impression was Lopez did enough to win, especially in the early rounds. I think he won big early and was competitive enough 5-12

Ray Mercer vs Bert Cooper.

Good slugfest between two warriors.Mercer was better but Cooper had good moments.

Lennox Lewis vs Donovan Ruddock


Lewis KOs Ruddock in 2 to retain his Commonwealth Heavyweight title, confident start from Lewis popping out the jab and right at the end of the 1st Lewis sent a chopping right hand on Ruddock and it took his legs away from him, the bell went as he got up, Ruddock hadn't recovered and early in the 2nd Lewis landed several right hands to club Ruddock down in the corner, he got up but a combination had him down and out, a short left hook on the inside looked to be the finishing punch, big win for Lewis

Brought Lennox right into the spotlight. A great win. I still remember my angst going into this fight and my utter excitement at the thunderous ending! The fight that really first made LL's name on the world level, IMHO.

Lennox Lewis Vs Tony Tucker



Lewis beats Tucker via comfortable UD to retain his World Heavyweight title, dropping him twice along the way, Tucker was too passive and never let his hands go enough until it was too late, Lewis had him down late in the 3rd coming over with that trademark right hand over the top and sending Tucker down for the first time in his career, after that Lewis outboxed Tucker, jabbing and holding out the left to set up the long right, Lewis hurt Tucker bad at the end of the 8th and Tucker just about survived the round, he was still hurt coming out for the 9th though and Lewis had him down again seconds into the round with a clubbing right hand and when Tucker got up Lewis wired in for the stoppage, he seemed to blow himself out though and Tucker regained his senses

Tucker had his best spell of the fight around then and finally began to let his hands go and try make something happen, Lewis might have gave away a couple of the later rounds but he comfortably seen it out and was a deserved winner, not a classic I must say

Lennox Lewis vs Tommy Morrison



Lewis stops Morrison in the 6th round of a non title fight, another dominant win for Lewis, dropped Morrison 4 times in the fight, had him down in the 2nd from a short left hook and again in the 5th from a cracking right uppercut, it was touch and go whether Morrison was gonna be allowed out for the 6th but he pleaded and was allowed out, Lewis dropped him early in the round with a monster jab and although Morrison showed bravery to get up, when a big left hook put him down a fourth time, the ref had seen enough and waved it off

Larry Holmes vs Ray Mercer.

Good heavyweight fight.Larry was good and showed nice boxing skill.Best Mercer's round was a round one when he hurt Larry.

This was probably the best performance of Holmes' post title career. The crowd was with him more than they were earlier in his career. Mercer looked bad for a good part of this fight.

Mercer takes a great shot though and was always dangerous and working up close roughing Lewis up, he just faded a little down the stretch and it cost him the win

There was a lot of action in that fight. I had Mercer winning 6-4. I could see a draw, but giving the decision to Lewis seemed to be pushing it. This may have been a much more important fight than people think. If Mercer gets the decision, he would probably be rated much higher than he is today. A loss would have really derailed Lewis who was trying to get back on top.

Yeah, even a draw was exaggerated. Lewis was overall more effective then.

Lennox Lewis vs Henry Akinwande



Lewis wins via 5th round DQ to retain his World Heavyweight crown after Akinwande is disqualified for persistent holding, obviously I knew the result beforehand but the 1st round was decent and you'd never have guessed Akinwande would get himself threw out like that, he did start the holding capers in the 2nd but I thought the ref was a bit harsh to take a point off in the round, after that Akinwande was just a master of his own downfall, everytime Lewis tried to work his way in Akinwande was all over him like an octopus, just a strange showing, especially when you consider Akinwande was an unbeaten world champ going into the fight, he dipped the legs of Lewis with a right hand at one point but it never changed his mindset

Mills Lane took Akinwande into his corner a few times to warn his corner but it was a lost cause, Lewis was clever as he did a bit of holding himself and kept the hands around Akinwande at times to give the impression he was being held but Akinwande can have no complaints, he kept at it and was rightly threw out in the 5th, terrible showing and a shambles

Johnny Tapia vs. Danny Romero - An excellent high quality boxing match at a fast pace. Tapia comes out and wins the first 4 rounds pretty handily but Romero works his way back in and is competitive as he's able to land the occasional big shot. Overall, Tapia's superior speed and skill were able to pull away and have him as a clear cut winner. Tapia boxed a very disciplined fight here.

Johnny Tapia vs. Nana Konadu - This was a clinic all the way. Tapia fought with great composure and discipline against the visibly bigger and stronger man. He moved really well and never tired, letting his hands go to put on a show at times. There was a bogus knockdown of Tapia in the 10th round, a round which he otherwise dominated as he did every round. Somehow 1 judge had it even and 1 judge had it 8-4 only.

Boza Edwards - Limon, hadn't seen it before.

15 round fights between fighters as hard, intense and resilient as these two are frightening to behold.

Greg Page vs Jimmy Young. One of the best Page's fight what i saw. Especially in first half off this bout.

Bruce Seldon vs Oliver McCall.Close fight .McCall stopped Seldon in 9.Seldon tired.Commentators said that it was upset.I don't understand why.

Jimmy Young vs George Foreman.Great perfomance by Young.Huge upset.
