In the weeks leading up to this fight, Ruiz has called Joshua a "robot" and also said the unified champ had a lot of weaknesses that he could exploit.

“I heard him say that! I’m going to smack him up now!” Joshua said to Boxing News. “It’s like in the [Alexander] Povetkin fight [in September last year]. When he hit me, I thought to myself, ‘I’m going to f*** you up now.’ Because he didn’t speak English, he didn’t trash-talk too much before the fight, so I respected him. But when you’re in there, you take the fight as it comes.

“Miller was going to get peppered – straight up. If Ruiz wants to go down that route of talking sh*t too, then I’m gonna want to break his jaw and hurt him really bad. But if he wants a good boxing match and he gets hit with a shot he didn’t see, and we shake hands after, then it’s best not to say anything.”

I think I saw a YouTube video of AJ saying the same things about a month ago. It seemed like a tongue-in-cheek or light-hearted remark rather than some fake WWE-style "aggressive" "mean-spirited" monologue - the sort of antics Deontay Wilder likes to perform.

That’s the problem with literal interpretation of written words, such as interview transcripts, as they don’t always convey the actual intention of the thoughts being conveyed.

on another note. i watched the povetkin fight again recently. povetkin was really landing some solid shots, and arguably took the first 3 rounds. though povetkin was a top class, though aging fighter.
ruiz shouldnt be too much trouble, he should be right there for the big right hand.
but imagining wilder landing clean like povetkin did, goodness me, that will be a good fight.

I agree with you about the povetkin fight. In the first 3 rounds it looked like AJ was trying to tíre povetkin out, but he took a lot of punishment in the process. I remember Joshua training his neck 'Tyson style' before the fight. I think he was fully expecting a barrage in the first 3 or 4 and knew he would take a bit of punishment. Don't know if that would work with wilder though.
There was more chitty-chat in the news today about Joshua vs Wilder being made this year. Id say there is some chance, I think it was Wilder that was stalling. If Wilder gets beat his confidence is gone and as Breazeale had mentioned, he might not fight ever again after. If Joshua got beat I think he would definitely use a rematch clause and get straight back.
