Once upon a time there was programs in prisons that produced some pretty good talents. Names like Bernard Hopkins, Ron Lyle, Rubin Carter, etc--- even actors like Danny Trejo were boxing champions while behind bars.

Video of B-Hop while in prison back in the day boxing it out in the early 90s.

As far as I'm concerned THE REAL UNDISPUTED (movie reference) was James Scott when he fought Eddie Gregory for the #1 contendership. It was the first documented pro fight (keywords) in America held behind prison walls.

They use to have Boxing classes in college and even High School back in the day.
I think Carmen Basilio was one of the last boxers to recieve his training in HS.

They should bring that back.

Ironically enough, when I was in school I was tasked to help the janitor once and saw these old boxes of trophies back in the 50s and prior and saw these boxing trophies. I was like, "Man I could have been a star athlete in my school," because I was always getting in trouble for fights. Our school only had baseball, basketball, volleyball, golf, track & field, and cross country.

I think my uncle, Jesus bless his soul, was on the school boxing team. I believe it was an affiliate program of the YMCA. Sidney Ohio once upon a time was a fight town until the state commission basically squeezed out county commissions.

Didn’t you ever think to try amateur boxing while at school?

Nearest amateur boxing program was 80 some odd miles away from where I lived. Being a teenager, no car, etc--- it'd be pretty difficult to do 160 miles round-trip every day or every other day. It's just not justifiable.

yeah, I grew up in the 1970's lived out in a rural area on the prairie.
There was a Karate dojo on the nearby Military Base
about 5 miles from our house which I walked home from after classes once a week after not taking the school bus home
(the school was next to the base)
The only Boxing Center was in nearest town about 16 miles away.
a bit too far to walk to.
I think I would have prefered actual Boxing then Kata and kicking my legs up and flying side-kicks

Charles"Sonny"Liston also got his boxing career started in Prison
(Missouri State Penitentary in Jefferson City (MO)
back in 1950-1952.
He served 2 years of a 5 year stretch
I think Jeff "Candy Slim" Merrit also got his boxing career started there Missouri State Penitentary in the late 1960's
when Joe Louis scounted him and got him an early release.
