Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
Re: Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
Joyce might be slow but he's fit and he piles on the pressure. I think that will be too much for Jennings in the end
Re: Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
I got lambasted by a poster for saying Jennings didn't have a fighter's heart. Glad you agree.gilgamesh wrote: ↑31 May 2019, 14:37 I'm mainly going with him because Jennings has looked lackluster in recent years. I think he has the ability to beat Joyce, but I don't know if he has the heart anymore to dig down as much as he'll need to at times in this fight. Not sure he ever did for that matter. The attitude of a fighter seemed to be one of the key ingredients missing from him.
Re: Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
It's just a mental hangup for him, where when things get tough in a fight he tends to be one of those guys who would rather cover up and try to survive than go for it, and do what it takes to get the win. I'm not faulting him, I'm sure it is quite scary to be in there with a 230 pound plus human being trying to beat the sh*t out of you
But it means he doesn't get the best out of his potential I'm afraid. He's a good fighter, just not quite a world class fighter. Just shy of it though. About as close as you can be to being a serious contender without being one as you can get. He has actually got a title shot once, and held his own reasonably well in that fight too so that's worth noting.

I got Jennings by decision or a round 9 or 10 tko. Joyce is the slowest heavy Ive ever seen . Jennings will be good enough to avoid all the telegraphed shots and I think joyce will totally gas around 9 or 10 ...the Jennings will attack.

I would expect Joyce to dominate.
Jennings gets knocked down by the reluctant Dimitrenko. And then gets knocked out by untested Rivas.
Obviously the feeling is that Jennings is on a rapid slide and has been chosen as an opponent. A designated victim.
I agree with that. He'll do ok until he takes a strong combination. Then I expect Jennings to go on the defensive and fight in strict survival mode fashion.
He may or may not go the distance. But if he does, it won't be close.

This is actually a very good fight from a learning more point of view. Joyce is slower than a glacier but Jennings chin is cracked. If Joyce steamrolls Jennings I’ll be impressed by 2019 standards.

Maybe he did but his management sure didn't.
All I'm saying is that going from Ustinov to Jennings is a huge leap I wasn't expecting. I'm sticking with my Jennings pick but I see this as a real 50/50 fight.
Re: Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
At his age time is a precious commodity. He has vast amateur experience against the best in the world, there is little sense in holding him back. He won't get very much better now and in two years he might have hit the skids.jujigatame wrote: ↑31 May 2019, 13:41 Great matchup, I'm surprised they're matching Joyce this tough. I got Jennings by decision.
I don't doubt for a second that he/his team wanted Chisora, I'm less sure about Miller or Ortiz.

If Joyce stops Jennings. You can bet the announcers are gonna hype it, using Wlads name. That he never stopped him.
But then Ortiz and Rivas have stopped him too.

Interesting bout. If Jennings is particularly motivated he can give Joyce problems if he's moving, and boxing. If he tries to slug it out with Joyce, and hangs on the ropes he's probably gonna get stopped inside 5.

Good to see a lot of love for this fight, Joyce is always good value, sure he's flawed but he's pretty relentless, he does remind me of Foreman, probably the Foreman we never got to see when he took the 10 year break
Re: Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
I think this is a good fight for Joyce, beating Jennings puts him on a decent level and as someone else said it’s significant step up from Ustinov who was never particularly good and is just a paid loser with a name of sorts these days...
Re: Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
Joyce by TKO...but a questionable one (early stoppage).
Re: Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
The big English lad should have little trouble with the ol tired American. Joyce looks like a real top box in this matchup

Joe Joyce (9-0, 9KOs) will also have his say in that conversation, especially at his current pace.
The 2016 Olympic Silver medalist takes on perhaps his most dangerous assignment to date, as he faces former title challenger Bryant Jennings in the evening’s chief support. The 6’6” Joyce checked in at 256 pounds, the lightest he’s weighed in his past five starts, and five pounds lighter than his most recent outing, a 3rd round stoppage of Alexander Ustinov less than two months ago in Stevenage, England.
Saturday’s contest will mark the third of 2019 for Joyce, who opened the year with a 6th round stoppage of former heavyweight titlist Bermane Stiverne in February.
Jennings (24-3, 14KOs) weighed 226 pounds for his first career fight outside of the United States. Conditioning has never been an issue for the Philadelphia (Penn.) native, who turns 35 in September.

Yeah at the risk of splitting hairs, it's more a question of mental toughness than heart, at least I would have said so prior Rivas. I remember Jennings said some uncomplimentary things about Whyte in an interview in London only to be ambushed on the London street by an angry confrontational Dillian Whyte.gilgamesh wrote: ↑31 May 2019, 14:48It's just a mental hangup for him, where when things get tough in a fight he tends to be one of those guys who would rather cover up and try to survive than go for it, and do what it takes to get the win. Bryant reacted as many people would. He was visibly rattled, you might even say shaken. It was the reaction of a polite, well brought-up, gentle man. I'm quite sure if that had been say TFury or Miller accosted by Whyte in the same circumstances, they would have given him a mouthful of f*ck off in return and thought little more about it. Bryant's reaction was perfectly understandable and appropriate - for a bank manager, but I would expect a heavyweight boxing contender to be a whole lot more belligerent.
Re: Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
At do not see Jennings going more than six with Joyce at this point.
Re: Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
Jennings had a very short prime, right now he is finished, and I can not imagine his victory.
BTW, I do not consider Joyce a top level fighter.

Indeed. Not enough this round from him though.
19 -19
Re: Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
Showboating from Joyce is really unnecessary. Close round. Slight edge to Joyce.
Re: Joe Joyce vs. Bryant Jennings - July 13, 2019
Round 4 to joyce. Jennings has some success with the right. Like to see him use it more.
Joyce is so slow, but he must have power.

Round 5 Jennings looks a little more relaxed. A little more comfortable. I gave him that round.
3-2 Joyce.
