Souleymane Cissokho went the distance for the third time in his past four fights Saturday afternoon.

The junior middleweight prospect couldn’t knock out Vladimir Hernandez, but he produced a convincing victory in their eight-round bout at Madison Square Garden. The 27-year-old Cissokho (9-0, 6 KOs) utilized his superior speed and athleticism to pound out a unanimous-decision win over the aggressive, persistent Hernandez in the first fight on the Anthony Joshua-Andy Ruiz Jr. undercard.

Senegal’s Cissokho, a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist for France, won all eight rounds on one scorecard (80-72) and seven rounds on two scorecards (79-73, 79-73).

The Mexican-born, Denver-based Hernandez (10-4, 6 KOs) has been knocked out only once. Israil Madrimov (2-0, 2 KOs), a highly touted prospect from Uzbekistan, stopped Hernandez in the sixth round of Hernandez’s previous fight, November 24 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

About 50 seconds into the seventh round, Cissokho blasted Hernandez with a three-punch combination that stopped Hernandez in his tracks. Cissokho drilled Hernandez with a straight right hand that made Hernandez stumble backward just before the end of the sixth round.

Hernandez landed two straight left hands early in the fifth round, which made Cissokho move away from him. Cissokho clipped Hernandez with a right-left combination with about a minute to go in the fifth.

Hernandez continued to move forward in the third round, but Cissokho made him pay by regularly landing right hands. Cissokho connected with two right hands and a left hook in the final 35 seconds of the second round.

I was just at the sports book here in Las Vegas. The over/under is 6.5 rounds. That's too low, Ruiz has no track record of being stopped ... much less early.

My wagering site has the unders favored at -135.

Joshua is a 22-1 choice.

Madison Square Garden, New York City - Olympic bronze medal winner Joshua Buatsi (11-0, 9 KOs) picked up a fifth round stoppage over Marco Antonio Periban (25-5-1, 16 KOs) in a light heavyweight contest.

Buatsi was coming off a three round blowout of Liam Conroy from back in March.

Periban was coming off a layoff of more than two years, and last saw action in May 2017 when he lost at twelve round decision to Avni Yildirim.

Buatsi's combinations and hand speed was on full display in the first round, as he worked over Periban. After a slow second, Buatsi really began to let his hands go in the third, as he unloaded with combinations to the head of Periban.

In the fourth round, Buatsi scored a flash knockdown when he dropped Buatsi against the ropes. Periban made it up and he was stunned by a variety of big shots to force the referee to jump in and wave it off.

Buatsi looked sharp. I think he could crack the global top 10 in a few more fights and could see him with a world title in a few years. He could be one of the first 2016 Olympians to win a world title as a pro.

Reality check for Kelly... He is one of the best talent in boxing... but still has to learn a few lessons to fully exploit his potential... he got busted up tonight... and his cocky stuff wasn't impressive imo... lacked stamina to end strong too... lots of stuff to work on... a MUCH closer fight than expected
