Warren news

Post by dookus »

From this fortnight's Private Eye, page 42:
Warren factions

Boxing promoter allegedly, riding high with leading heavyweight contender and former undefeated champion Tyson Fury due to fight in Las Vegas next month, has entered into an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA) with his creditors.

The IVA, agreed on 24 April, headed off a bankruptcy petition from HM Revenue & Customs filed last October. The taxman's petition was dismissed at a high court hearing on 15 May. The court was told the IVA - details of the total debts, creditors and repayment terms were not disclosed - had been approved by 82 percent of creditors.

Another creditor is Warren's former lawyers, Hill Dickinson. In January Warren was ordered to make an interim payment of £350,000, on the basis that it was "highly unlikely that the amount ultimately due...would be any less than that".

Hill Dickinson was claiming almost £1m in costs and "100 percent success" fees over the 2014 litigation Warren brought against former three-weight world champion Ricky Burns and manager Alex Morrison. A futher hearing was to decide exactly how much Warren should pay.

Warren obtained judgments and costs orders - £75,000 plus £372,000 against Burns and £50,000 plus £270,000 against Morrison - but collected nothing, after both were declared bankrupt in 2015. Because of non-recovery, Warren claimed he had not "won" and so should not have to pay his lawyers, who were acting on a "no win, no fee" contingency basis. Last December the appeal court ruled he should still pay.

Just another day in the office for Frank. Unless he's nuts, he'd have walked off into the sunset years ago if he didn't get a buzz from this type of thing.

Weak AF, who advised him on that- ah, his lawyers probably weren't really speaking to him at the time, guess he was winging it to play for time with that weak-AF gambit, I can't imagine a man as smart and streetwise (and versed in legal preceedings) actually thought he would make that one stick.

So basically if you are involved in boxing and don't do business with allegedly you're one of two things. 1st rate or 3rd rate.
