You are talking about Kitione Lave, who was more usually known as the Tongan Terror. Do you have a possible year for this and I will have a look for you?

Nothing in there for September or October 1958. Boxing News did a feature on Lave in 1953 but there is nothing in it about him and Burton. How sure are you that it was Boxing News? Would be quite unusual for them, at that time, to mention anything about bare-knuckle boxing involving a licensed professional.

From what I understand Lave was down to peanuts. The police intervened. It was mentioned in Bartley Gorman's autobiography KING OF THE GYPSIES. I'm assuming it was covered by BOXING NEWS in September of 1958 because it went down at that time, and the book has quotes from the BN article.

There was another article on him in 1972. I will check that. This sort of thing was far more likely to have been mentioned retrospectively than at the time

I was right. It is mentioned in some detail in the 1972 article. I will post a copy of this for you tomorrow. If anyone else is interested it is featured within an article on Lave in the August 18 1972 edition of Boxing News, on page 9. It mention Hugh Burton, rather than Uriah, but I am fairly sure that that is an error

Uriah Burton was legally named Hugh. He's the grandfather of present day Hosea Burton, the light heavyweight. :TU: I appreciate it immensely Miles.

I'm sure the BKB crowd at various sites will get a tremendous kick out of one of their legends nearly fighting one of boxing's bigger stars of the day in the 50s.

Also, does BN have any pictures of the John Fury-Henry Akinwande fight? Many thanks.

The Boxing News today had an article by Alex Daley on Ron Barton former British Light heavy champion.
Don't know if anyone is interested but when Dave Chanley returned from the Empire Games in Vancouver he was intent on turning pro. Ron Barton took him to meet the Krays in a pub in South London who wanted to manage him, with a ' stooge' put up as the manager of record.
Dave politely turned the, down!

Hi Miles,

Just going through some old messages while in isolation and found this which is great and a shame we can't see way more of your work on here and the boxinghistory site. Shame a lot of these records are not availble for public consumption

Boxrec has an Australian fight for Bombardier McLeod I assume that's just posted to the wrong fighter :bag:

Thanks for all your great work and contributions.

Hi kochamp. Thanks for the nice things you said. That Australian contest for McLeod is an error. It isn't him, he never went to Australia.

Boxrec has many similar mis-posts from this period I am afraid. There are very many instances of boxers with the same, or similar names whose bouts have been attributed to the wrong record. This is one of them.

Miles Templeton.
