William Hill = Bastards

Post by JimmyJamJerusalem »

Only just checked, but I lost all my money by betting on Barrera to win the other day. Seems they only go by the decision announced in the ring, and once the fighters leave the ring, the decision cannot be reversed. £75 Wankers.

It is a right bastard sometimes.

I've had to happen to me whereby I have backed a team to win a rugby match, in a cup final say, and it's had to go to extra time. The team eventually "wins", but the swines at the bookies say "its the result of the first 80mins only that counts".... i.e. you lose.

So annoying.

this one, to be fair, is pretty standard ie. footy & rugby bets are for 'normal' time only...

this one though I'd say you have a case, at least a case worth putting something in writing to Hills and kicking up a bit of a fuss about. Given the FACT the decision was incorrectly announced as a draw, the correct decision being a Barrera win, IMO you should be paid out..

William hills are the worst for it.
Do yourself a favour lads, sign up for paady power, ladbrokes or tote's.
They generally give better odd's across the board too.
Paady's paid me out no problems.

I checked the wiiliam hills result(as I am a member of them too)and I see that they were only paying on the draw.

Along time ago didn't boxingchat give us some form of gambling regulatory body of sorts that you can appeal too?Might be worth looking through BCs old posts or calling SN amnd begging to talk to boxingchat:

'Hello Sports Network'

'Get me boxingchat on the phone'

'who'

'Don't play with me girlie, get me boxingchat its an emergency'

'Lirva someone wants to talk to you'

That's utter rubbish - they are ripping you off plain and simple. Take it up with the people lv recommends.

The fact is, you don't just want your money back, you want your winnings too. The result was a Barrera win and that's what you bet on. More fool them if they paid out on the draw when it wasn't.

I know it stinks but befor you complain check the rules of the company about boxing results. Also ibas genrally find in favour of the bookies. gambling debts arnt enforcable by law either.
I work for a bookies and know that most have the rule sewn up in favour of the bookmaker.
As for football and rugby bets you get 2 different prices for 90/80 minutes or winning the match outright (extra time or penaltys)

You should write to their MD and/or Customer Services Director and state your disappointment and annoyance at their stance. This will cost you a first class stamp and might just get you something

There have been a few horse races over the years where in a photo finish the wrong horse was called as the winner only for the result to be corrected fairly quickly. While no bookmaker likes to pay out twice, sometimes as a gesture of goodwill (also known as "See, we're decent guys...keep betting with us, sucker!") they do.

There probably wasn't all that much money staked on the fight and to take a stance like they appear to have done with you is bad public relations. If you're a regular Hills customer I'd state that point, and see what gives.

If you get no satisfaction from your approach to their senior management then I'd write to the Editor of the Racing Post and highlight what looks to be a sharp interpretation of the rules. (And before anyone tells me I'm naive let me add that I am quite familiar with the bookmaking industry courtesy of a lifelong interest and involvement with racing)

On this one I'd take the view that if you don't kick up a fuss at the top level you can kiss goodbye to your bet. Ask...and see if you receive...

Good Luck! J

I myself work for an online bookmakers http://www.extrabet.com, I have to say i think Will Hill have made a bit of a mistake there, I have worked in the industry for years and I have to say I think they have dealt you a very hard hand, to be diplomatic. I'm not sure going to IBAS will do much good as they have the rule displayed in the section on their website.
I know we payed out as a Barrera winning as did most other bookmakers.
Try writing to the Customer Services Manager, it's not like something like this happens every day so they may bend the rules for you.

I agree. And it's not exactly like the score card error was discovered days after the event. Juarez was still in his dressing room when the news came through, so by the time the UK bookmakers woke up the following morning the correct result was known!

Sure, I know that "result as read in the ring" is what the rules will say, and that's fine if you're looking at a situation where a fight is later declared a "no contest" because one of the fighters fails a drugs test or something. After all, a line has to be drawn somewhere on a result for betting purposes otherwise we'd have chaos.

If Hills stand by their decision not to pay out on your bet then IMO it's a poor reflection on their PR and market image. I have to say that I've never had any issues with them over the years, but there's a lot of choice in today's betting industry and customer loyalty is worth bearing in mind by any betting firm. Others bookmakers stances on this fight include - see extract from Google search below...
::::::::::::::::::::::
Some bookmakers such as Stan James, Boylesports, Coral and Skybet paid on both a draw and a win for the 1-5 favourite.

This cost the former around £10,000 and a spokesman said, "We generally settle as quickly as possible and we intially settled on the draw but have also paid on the winner.

"Most of the money on the draw came in running in the later stages when the fight was very close. We refused to say no to those punters who backed the draw."

Skybet said: "As a gesture of goodwill, we have paid on both results."

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Guess you'll be betting with some of those ones next time!

Again, Good Luck...I hope you get some return

It's true, the real result was announced 20 minutes later (prbably before they actually paid out on that event) they should pay out, If I was in your shoes I'd kick up a big fuss about it.

Did occur to me after I hit "submit" that as the bookmakers were "betting in running" they'd have been up and awake during the fight so their systems might have triggered payments immediately result was announced - at least for bets placed over the internet. Still think that there's a proper position on this one that calls for a bit of goodwill on Hill's part. Clearly some other bookmakers have taken that view.

I remember a few years back when Fred Done (now Betfred) who is a big Man Utd fan paid out on Man Utd winning the title weeks before the end of the season, only to see them finish runners up. He didn't whinge and whine that he'd made a mistake, just paid up and milked the situation PR-wise for all it was worth. Maybe there's no PR in a minority sport like Boxing!

Some of these bookies just chance their arm. They're probably thinking that if everyone that has been screwed over complains once, they can just tell them "rules is rules", then most of the complainers will go away. Then just a minority will really kick up a stink and get their money. But the bookie doesn't care because they get to keep the money of the majority that walked away with tails between legs.

The bookies are utter pudenda when it comes to boxing. Ladbrokes self proclaimed "fair play rules" shafted me the other month on the Alex Arthur fight when I backed him to win on points, which he did, but Ladbrokes wouldn't pay out on account of the fight not going the full 12 rounds.

What kind of fornicating rule is that? Its like not paying out on Chelsea winning the Premiership because they won it without playing the full 38 games. Retards.

Say in the letter your going to write to boxing monthly, and a host of local/national newspapers, watchdog programmes about their questionable business practises if you do not receive your full payout. Worth a try

Just an add-on to P-N's advice above.

Tell them that you'll be writing to Boxing Monthly, Boxing News etc whatever the result - good or bad.
They'll know that having a problem resolved satisfactorily leaves a customer happier than if they had no problem in the first place and should be keen for the good PR. That should help your cause.
