If Ortiz defeats Wilder.....Good or bad for HW division ?
If Ortiz defeats Wilder.....Good or bad for HW division ?
What do you think about ? Why ?
Re: If Ortiz defeats Wilder.....Good or bad for HW division ?
bad, the guy is like 40 or 41 and wilder makes for more interesting fights

It will show that the division is weaker than we thought at this time. It's good in that it opens up all the championships to many more top heavy's, meaning more fighters would have a great chance to win a title. Further muddles the division.

..the less zeroes they have on their resumes the better....sort of like losing your virginity, all of a sudden you have nothing else to lose, you are more cooperative, accomodating, flexible and available...
Re: If Ortiz defeats Wilder.....Good or bad for HW division ?
I agree with you, but losing it to Fury keeps the division interesting. losing it to Ortiz makes it more foggy.
Re: If Ortiz defeats Wilder.....Good or bad for HW division ?
at least andys a younger guy and likable, ortiz is an oldy with no personality or charm, i cant see how him winning is better then wilder staying unbeaten
i will be really disappointed if all the top guys take tumbles before weve seen any of them beat the other

I posted this on another thread, but we could have Ruiz, Schwarz and Ortiz as the strap holders. Unlikely but it would teach AJ, Fury and Wilder a lesson that delaying fighting the top fighters is a risky game.
Personally, I think Ortiz is talented, he seems pretty congenial; but, he’s ancient and marred by PED infringements.

I don’t like the rematch. I’d rather see AJ v Fury and TFKoB v Wilder. Winners and losers meet.

Bad.
The heavyweight division always needs a monster puncher to attract attention.
It won't harm the sport as a whole since the heavyweight division doesn't have the allure that it once did. But the division would suffer without Wilder's eye catching stay at the top.

I don't see how it couldn't be anything other than very bad. The division has finally started to gain some steam with undefeated powerhouses Joshua and Wilder. Then you throw in an undefeated character in Fury. Joshua getting beat wasn't all bad because of who beat him. Andy is exciting and young. But, Luis is old and doesn't have much longer in the sport. So he won't really be in the mix too long. And some of Wilder's hype will have been deflated by being beaten by an old man.

I generally like things continually evolving in boxing rather than becoming staid but in this case it would probably be better if Wilder lost to a younger guy if/when he does lose rather than to a guy who's around 40.
Re: If Ortiz defeats Wilder.....Good or bad for HW division ?
Yeah, Wilder is far more marketable than Ortiz, he also tends to be in more entertaining fights.
I know he has pissed a few people off with his big talk before fights, but that is just a hype thing, he seems a reasonable guy when I've seen him interviewed away from the big stage.
Although, if Ruiz's win was a win for the chubby guys, maybe an Ortiz win could be good for the older fellas. Just saying.

I don't see why it would be bad. I'm assuming it's another good fight(odd to me why so many are against the rematch) and set up a trilogy.
Re: If Ortiz defeats Wilder.....Good or bad for HW division ?
It would be good for the division. Great eras are about great rivalries.
Re: If Ortiz defeats Wilder.....Good or bad for HW division ?
IMO, it's always bad when old guys are at the top of the rankings while their physical abilities diminish with age. If Ortiz beats Wilder and becomes #1-3, then he's still old, on the decline, and all of that hype he wins will just vanish with his decline. It would be like Lennox retiring without a third loss, Bowe retiring without a second loss, Vitali retiring without a third loss, and Marciano retiring undefeated. They just packed-up their points and went home without passing them on to someone else. If Ortiz beat Wilder, physically declined some more, and then lost; it would still be a partial waste of the status he gained. You want the top status to belong to guys who are young and in-prime, and you want them to pass that torch on to someone else young before they start declining.
(Note: Ortiz is 40, and people have been claiming that he's on the decline since 2016)

For me it comes down to....
(1) Is/was it a great fight? -- the first one was so no reason to think this won't be.
(2) Are there more fights out there that seem 50-50(ish)?
(3) Do those fights get made?
