I love that fight. But it has taken on mythological status
Marquez vs Pacquiao IV or Joshua vs Ruiz I, What Was the fight of the decade (2010-2020) ?

I know genius. But when a source names a fight, fighter, or athlete of a decade, they are refering to a period of ten years starting at a 00, 10, 20, etc... not that silly example you gave.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑11 Jun 2019, 13:28 A decade means a time period of ten years. Look it up!![]()

Hearn/Hagler is a fun watch just the same as Foreman/Lyle, but not a 'great fight.'

Why are you bothering? EO is out feeding his narcissistic hunger. No one cares about the time period in this thread except for EO. Stop beating your head against the wall dude!Impractical Poster wrote: ↑11 Jun 2019, 14:05 I know genius. As juvenile as it be, I find amusement in going back and forth with EO. It's intriguing to see what lengths he will go to in defending even the most trivial points.

Fighter of the decade type awards are usually nominated after the event itself... after the completion of ten full years.Impractical Poster wrote: ↑11 Jun 2019, 14:05 I know genius. Using your definition, we’re still in the midst of the current decade, since it hasn’t ended yet, because it doesn’t actually end until the 31st December, 2019.
A boy celebrating his tenth birthday today, would have been born a decade ago.

It was entertaining. I said that. It just wasn't a great fight. It was a slugfest much like Hagler/Hearns.SenorPipino wrote: ↑11 Jun 2019, 14:19 You didn't think that Foreman-Lyle was a great fight?
It had to be the most entertaining, back and forth, high profile heavyweight slugfest ever.
Re: Marquez vs Pacquiao IV or Joshua vs Ruiz I, What Was the fight of the decade (2010-2020) ?
foreman -lyle was easily better then hagler-hearns at least, some real shifts and flows and big moments for both
Re: Marquez vs Pacquiao IV or Joshua vs Ruiz I, What Was the fight of the decade (2010-2020) ?
In retrospect, yes, but Hagler v Hitman was more highly anticipated, both said they were going to try take the others’ head off, and both tried. It was massively entertaining for as long as it lasted.
Foreman v Lyle was entertaining in the way two dudes in a rural bar decide to take turns throwing haymakers until one doesn’t get up.

You speak as if I don't understand a decade is ten years. My point is the context it's being used. When naming a fight or fighter of the decade, it's used as in fighter of the 80's, 90's, etc...
I challenge you to find me a sporting article naming a fighter, player, or athlete of the decade where the decade is in between the 10s of of the decade.

Dear EO,
How about say what was the fight of the decade so far? Would that make you cease this endless nonsense?
Thank you.

Re: Marquez vs Pacquiao IV or Joshua vs Ruiz I, What Was the fight of the decade (2010-2020) ?
out of those two it is of course marquez-pac.
joshua ruiz was spectacular for the outcome,
not for the action.
but my favorite right now is joshua - klitschko,
which will age well and IMO turn out to be a
classic. my proof is that it is the only fight in
recent years i go back to and watch and time
and time again i hate wlad for trying to hook
him for the finish when that was the one punch
that AJ saw from a mile even being out on his
feet.

Hold on. I may have to apologize.. When you say Fighter of the decade type awards are usually nominated after the event itself, you are referring to the event being the end of the decade, itself (ie... end of the 90s being December 31st, 1999) or are you saying the event is something else, like a career defining fight? For some reason, I assumed you were talking about a big performance for some reason. Don't know why...Enlightened-One wrote: ↑11 Jun 2019, 14:23 Fighter of the decade type awards are usually nominated after the event itself... after the completion of ten full years.

I already addressed the issue you’ve raised. You just decided against reading it.
If you want 9½ years to be the same as a decade, since we’ve not reached 2020 yet, then so beit. You win!

It is the most spectacular of their series against each other without question. I'm not taking anything away from the fight, just saying it doesn't strike me as one of the greatest fights of all time. It was highly memorable however, and definitely THE marquee win of Marquez's career. The one that he'll still be bragging about when he's an old man.Ricky wrote: ↑10 Jun 2019, 20:37 I'd take that more seriously if you followed it up with something better than Ruslan vs Bradley. As good as that fight was, it was hardly the highest echelon of the sport in a technical sense. Pacquiao JMM 4 was 2 absolute masters of their craft going to total war with a incredible results and the greatest KO in boxing history imo.
As much as I enjoy watching old classics like Rumble in the Jungle, No Mas & Hagler Hearns, they don't measure up to Pac Jmm 4 imo. (I actually watched Thrilla in Manilla tonight).
Now, i think rewatching fights from before your time certainly loses some context; live fights come with greater excitement of being in the here & now and not knowing whats going to happen, so perhaps the classics probably start off at a disadvantage. My jaw was wide open for 5 minutes when Marquez laid him out.

Hagler hearns was short and a brawl which is rare between first ballot hof types. But i agree... hearns briefly stunned hagler and that was about it. After that a one sided ass kicking.
Castillo v corrales and nearly all the vasquez v Marquez fights were better with much more drama
Jmm v Pacquiao 4 is the best fight of the 2010's so far
