I really don't know why. I just don't like him
Del La Hoya came out of a prominent boxing family that had already made money in the game; he had every opportunity and advantage and was virtually assured a successful career, all he had to do was win . . .

and then he did; despite all the hoop and holder that came with him, he measured up and had a damn good career . . .

it was easy to 'hate' him, I did too, but in the end he was good, not bad for the game.

 I've never understood the hate for Fury. A white heavyweight who can actually box and trash talk. No he's no exciting puncher, but that's like writing off Pernell Whitaker because he was strictly a stylist.

I'm sure people will jump on me now that I dared put Fury and Whitaker in the same paragraph  but I don't understand the hate. This is a scientific sport. Not a toughman contest.

Unless it has to do with Fury personally as a man?

I don't hate his skill. I hate the fact that he walked away from the Heavyweight Championship and became a fat sh*t for over 2 years disgracing the sport I love, and never gave Wladimir his rematch.

I do find him boring to watch, but I don't fault him for doing what works effectively.

Sugar Ray Leonard - but it has nothing to do with his boxing. The man is a total phony, all sweetness and humility when the cameras are on, but a total jerk the rest of the time. As a member of the media, on more than one occasion I witnessed his total contempt for fans and anyone else he perceived to be not totally enthralled in his presence. Most memorable was his petulant response to an elderly couple requesting a photo with his after the final press conference before his 1988 bout with Don Lalonde. Enraged because they were wearing Lalonde T-shirts, he brushed them off with a terse "Don't you people know I don't associate with losers?" Nice.

He's one of the fakest ever. Those 7up commercials with his kid enrages you when you find out he barely saw him. Great fighter, shitty human. He's certainly not alone in this sport. Robinson was way worse.

Roberto Duran. James Toney. Mike Tyson. At one time I had Larry Holmes and Hector Camacho on the list but I came to like them in the end.

Yea, what's the problem with Roberto, trash talking is OK even if you threaten to kill a lady's husband in front of her children. I mean that's not as bad as saying, say: "I want to crush his son's testicles," is it?

I wonder if he called her a puta?

Yea, Duran is unfairly maligned; I'd let him baby sit my grand children.

He held his wife virtually as a hostage in their home and beat her worse than LaMotta. She eventually escaped. His kids said he paid more attention to other kids and their adulation than them. He was a piece of shit and not many know,

No wonder Robinson and LaMotta became buddies. That's crazy. I knew he loved to beat the hell out of anyone willing in the gym--- like he did Gene LeBell back in the 50s--- regardless of their skill level, but never knew he was a woman beater and the like.

Terrifying shit. There was an HBO doc on it. Like walk in the door and just launch a flush hook type shit if she left the home.

I'll have to try and find that documentary. That reminds me of Bing Crosby type stuff. Never would have thought.

No worries, enjoy. Been a number of years but besides the disturbing content I recall it being very good.

I live by the motto "don't hate the player, hate the game", which fits perfectly to boxing industry. Sure Canelo has all the right reasons to stay in his place due to his enormous starpower, but this is also a sport and De La Hoya first, should remind that true qualities last over "predestination".

Watched it and didn't see references to him beating his wife and all but....

This one looks like the "tell all" documentary.

Its all good. He certainly was quite a fake person. The sad bit for me was his ex-wife, who was beaten & cheated on, after all these years said she regretted leaving him. That's what psychologists would call typical of spousal abuse victims. She was a gorgeous woman too.

All-in-all, his financial problems we're all his own. I don't feel sorry for him fighting into his mid-forties because of money. He lived as he lived. He was a prima dona who spent the money as fast as he made it and thought he was better than everyone else in every regard of life.

He may have been the greatest skilled boxer in history--- though I will always say Sam Langford was the greatest--- but the fact so many people on that documentary basically kisses his ass and gushed over him DESPITE knowing how he really was in person, goes to show how fake the business actually is.

Treating his kids and grandkids like crap was just the tip of the iceberg. He was an out and out publicity whore. The sad thing is his kids basically blamed his second wife, rather than him, for being a complete schmuck--- which goes to show, again, that's typical of abused and neglected kids, transferring blame to everyone else but the person who really was to blame.

Some of the comments he's made in interviews didn't exactly endear me to him either. That combined with the fact that he's boring as sh*t in the ring means I won't be a fan of his anytime soon. That being said, my respect for his ability did increase as a result of the Wilder bout.

There is an old documentary on HBO on him. Goes into details via interviews with his wife and children.
