Michael Conlan vs. Vladimir Nikitin - 3 August 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Michael “Mick” Conlan’s amateur career ended in controversy and a pair of middle fingers. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Conlan appeared to have bested Russian standout Vladimir Nikitin in the 56-kilogram quarterfinals. The judges disagreed, and Conlan responded with a memorable double middle-finger salute.

Almost three years to the day since Conlan flashed those digits, the Olympic rivals will run it back in the paid ranks, this time on Irish soil.

Conlan will face Nikitin in a 10-round featherweight bout Saturday, Aug. 3 in a massive outdoor fight at Falls Park in his home city of Belfast. Conlan-Nikitin will take place as part of the annual Féile an Phobail, Europe’s largest community festival.

Conlan-Nikitin will stream live in the United States beginning at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT on ESPN+
“This is the opportunity for Mick Conlan to right what most observers felt was an injustice,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “That being said, Nikitin is a real aggressive fighter, and he believes that a victory over Conlan in August would cement the one he was given in the Rio Olympics.”

“I am delighted that I will be fighting Vladimir Nikitin in front of 10,000 fans,” Conlan said. “This is literally home turf for me and it is absolutely huge. I am West Belfast and Falls Road born and bred so this means everything to me. Vladimir Nikitin and I have unfinished business from the 2016 Olympics, and I can't wait to set the record straight."

“The fight with Vladimir Nikitin has been talked about for a long time now, and MTK Global and Top Rank have worked extremely hard along with Féile an Phobail to make it happen,”
said Jamie Conlan, Professional Development Manager, MTK Global. “Michael Conlan is coming home for one of the biggest fight nights Belfast will have ever seen.”

Conlan (11-0, 6 KOs) entered the pro ranks as one of Ireland’s most beloved sporting figures, having earned an Olympic bronze medal in 2012 and gold medals at both the European and World Championships in 2015. He was favored to win Olympic gold in 2016, but Nikitin and the judges thwarted those plans. “The Conlan Revolution” turned pro in front of a sold-out Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden crowd on St. Patrick’s Day in 2017. He won the vacant WBO Intercontinental featherweight belt last December in Manchester, England, besting Jason Cunningham via unanimous decision. In his last bout, in front of a raucous St. Patrick’s Day crowd at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, Conlan defeated Ruben Garcia Hernandez over 10 rounds.

Nikitin (3-0, 0 KOs) did not turn pro immediately following the 2016 Olympics, electing to fight as an amateur throughout 2017. He signed a professional contract in 2018 with Top Rank, in large part because he wanted to face Conlan as a pro. Nikitin’s come-forward style has translated to the pro ranks, as he’s won a trio of clear-cut unanimous decisions. He has fought on the same card as Conlan twice as a professional. The message was clear: Conlan and Nikitin were destined to meet again.

It will finally happen, in front of more than 10,000 of Conlan’s rowdiest supporters. Will it be Rio Revenge or another shining moment for Nikitin?

Gonna be very hostile.

Not his fault he beat Conlan. Blame the judges. But fans don't see it that way.

Even if Nikitin KO's Conlan. He still might struggle to get the decision. I hope Nikitin is getting very well paid for the fight.

Terrestrial TV channels in Bidding War to show Mick Conlan v Vladimir Nikitin rematch

No Irish or UK television details were announced today at the press conference to unveil Mick Conlan and Vladimir Nikitin’s pro rematch but fans on this side of the Atlantic needn’t worry.

The Féile fight card was formally confirmed this afternoon in Belfast and Conlan [11(6)-0] will get his chance at Olympic revenge on Saturday August 3rd in the Falls Park.

The fight headlines a Top Rank bill which will be shown via the ESPN+ app in America but no details regarding Irish and UK television were divulged during the press conference at the Balmoral Hotel.

Thankfully though, the bill will be available to watch on this side of the world, with a carrier to be confirmed shortly.

Jamie Conlan, older brother and manager to Mick, revealed to media after the press conference that a bidding war is currently taking place between a number of broadcasters both satellite and terrestrial.

The former super flyweight world title challenger explained that “we’re in negotiation with various UK and European-based television stations as well as Russian TV, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.”

“I think there’s going to be another announcement when we get the UK broadcaster on board, I think it could be big.”

“It could be a terrestrial broadcaster, we’re still in negotiations, there are two terrestrial TV channels involved and a major broadcaster as well.”

Conlan’s fights have, largely, been shown on the specialist allegedly channel, which is available in Ireland through the eir Sport pack, thus far with the exception of his clash with Jason Cunningham on the undercard of Warrington-Frampton which was shown on BT Sport Box Office

Additionally, his first two fights were shown, deferred, on Irish terrestrial leader RTÉ.

Don’t see Sky bidding - so it’s BT only for UK - Conlan isn’t that popular.

MTK or Frank will need to fill the undercard and after his IRA karaoke in US he’s not exactly popular with other half of his own country.

It really would. Conlan annoys me, not his fault but it wins me up how he's made out to be some ATG already and that we have to love him. Soon as he steps up to proper world level he'll get sparked out.

I agree - other than it is largely Conlans fault that he not very likeable.

The other lad is set up to lose, I will be cheering him on, although he will have to knock Conlan out to win.

Nikitin: Conlan Will Regret This, I Beat Him Twice, I'll Win Again!

Nikitin (3-0) has won all three of his fights since turning professional, and he’s relishing the chance to share the ring with Conlan again.

Nikitin said: “When I turned professional last year, the man I wanted to fight most was Michael Conlan. Michael has said a lot of things since the Olympics about how he was robbed of a medal.

“Well, I am coming to his hometown during their biggest festival to show everyone my Olympic victory was not a fluke. This is going to be repeat, not revenge.

“Conlan will regret pushing for this fight. I beat him twice in the amateurs and will do the same as a pro. It will feel even sweeter to beat him in his hometown. Belfast here I come!"

Vladimir Nikitin only just beat Juan Tapia on a MD decision who is rated 541 in the world. It now Should be an easy win for Collan.

It's brave for Nikitin to take this fight so early, as Conlan has already gained more pro-experience.

MTK Global have announced a UK broadcast and promotional deal with allegedly of Queensberry Promotions and BT Sport for Michael Conlan vs. Vladimir Nikitin at Belfast’s Féile an Phobail on August 3.

The agreement will bring the colossal #MTKFightNight to UK screens on BT Sport and be promoted by allegedly and the team at Queensberry Promotions who also promoted Conlan’s previous homecoming fight against Adeilson dos Santos to a packed audience in the SSE Arena last July.

Conlan said: "I'm delighted to be working with allegedly, Queensberry Promotions and BT Sport again. They broadcasted my Belfast homecoming night and that was a special night. This promises to be even better.

"I'm determined to exact revenge on Nikitin and set a record straight on August 3 and I want as many people as possible watching me do just that.

"To those lucky enough to have tickets to be there in person and to all those who will be tuning in from around the world; I can promise you a night to remember."

The former world amateur champion’s older brother, MTK Global Professional Development Coordinator Jamie Conlan, said: “This is great news for the event, for Mick and for everyone involved.

“Given this is going to be one of the biggest - and certainly loudest - boxing events Irish boxing has seen for many years, having a giant UK broadcaster on board as well as a giant US broadcaster was always inevitable.

“We’ve always had a great relationship with Frank and his team and are delighted to agree this deal with them together with BT Sport and we look forward to working with them on creating a truly momentous occasion.”

Warren added: “Conlan vs Nikitin have unfinished business in the ring and it is fantastic to be bringing this show to BT Sport. Belfast is a massive boxing city; they really get behind their local fighters and August 3rd is going to be another big night of boxing for them to look forward to.”

Féile an Phobail Director Kevin Gamble said: “The announcement that BT Sport will now be screening the Michael Conlan fight night live from the Falls Park during Féile an Phobail along with ESPN+ is massive news.

“This is going to be one of the biggest nights ever in the Irish sporting calendar.”

Further news of fights and fighters starring on this unique event will be forthcoming in due course.
