punch harder (or lighter) then there record

Post by jamamb »

frampton said josh warr, he of abismal ko rate, hit him harder then anyone has. josh has also shook a good few guys up without stopping them

who are some guys who hit harder then there ko rate let on?

jono carrol doesnt seem so featherfisted as his ko rate would suggest
donair only has like a 50 percent ko rate but has absolutely flattened a good few at a decent level

on the other hand, vitali had a fanstastic ko rate, but imo was an averageish puncher. he just basically was death by a 1000 slaps

I think Fury can hit hard if he actually wanted to trade. I've seen him hurt pretty tough men from time to time. Then again it'd be odd for a 260+ pound man not to hurt you. But he prefers to stick and move and embarrass opponents.

Vitali Klitschko certainly doesn't seem to have the kinda one punch power his record would suggest he has. He often broke guys down over time, more so than being an outright banger.

Sergio Martinez developed into a pretty solid puncher at his peak, better than his record would've indicated prior to that. But that was more a case of just everything he'd learned coming together for him than him just simply punching harder all of the sudden, which I'm sure there is many cases of.

Ali had a KO rate of 61%. He didn't hit that hard, as we all know. I'd bet take out the stopped by cuts and it goes way down.

as a comparison, Lennox Lewis punched Briggs in the face maybe a dozen times and stopped him easily

Vitali punched Briggs in the face three dozen times every round for 12 rounds, and didn't

i'd say the point was a fair one.

the main thing that came together for him was his cocktail of special supplements, if I don't miss my guess. (he was based in Spain when Spanish doctors were a byword for cutting edge PED's)

Najib daho had 11 Kos in 60 fights but punched much harder than that later in his career the ko of Pat cowdell is the obvious highlight but there was others as well.

Virtually all boxers punch damn hard, and hard enough to KO anyone. Tactics is another thing though, are they more suited jabbing on the move, concentrating on workmate or planting their feet and getting off the big shots. Also of course it is about what your opponents allow you to do.
Punching hard is easy, landing them is something else!

Vitali had chronic knee and shoulder injuries that forced him to adapt his style and ramp down the torque considerably into his thirties. He WAS a big puncher who became a spiteful, attritional volume puncher.

Chris Eubank Snr only had 23KOs in 45 wins but was a solid hitter, he managed to drop Carl Thompson at CW

Liberal use of his head also made him dangerous.

Carlos Baldomir.

He could really hurt guys. I think sometimes there are many boxers who punch very hard but are not skilled enough to land clean so don’t land clean or often enough to score a lot a KOs.

Reversely some guys may not punch so hard but they are able to land at will on opponents due to their skill and so get a lot of stoppages.

Also thought of current British bantamweight champion Kash Farooq. Only five stoppages but five in his last six and at title level. In his case early in his career he faced a lot of journeymen who were probably good at surviving (they fight very often so don’t want to get stopped and get a suspension & loss of potential earnings ) and/or didn’t come to win. Whereas when a man comes to win it can be easier to score a KO as he leaves himself open more.
