Middleweights : Nigel Benn vs. James Toney

IMO Toney would stop Benn in 8-9 rounds.

What did your opinions?

Toney far too good for Benn IMO, I think he'd stop him him in 6.

Which Toney are we talking? The one that 'beat' Dave Tiberi?

Benn's made for Toney. Repeat of the Watson fight.

Benn was a deeply emotional-instinctive fighter who often needed to feel disrespected or under pressure to deliver his best and he'd start any fight with Toney as the underdog.

Toney had all the calibre, recognition and profile.
And that would have been right-up Benn's street I would suggest.

He revelled in being the next guy the G-Man was to going to obliterate, shocked Barkley with his outright aggression and beat the living brown-stuff out of Galvano in Italy which was a nasty place to fight back then.

He'd have been up for Toney and when he found that extra level he was a nightmare. Conversely, Nigel was typically at this worst when he was heavily favoured or simply got too emotional which was the case with Eubank and Watson.

I am not sure Toney likes Benn at all....but it needs to be the right Benn who comes into the ring with real intent but without the red-mist that saw him blow winnable fights.

Saw most of Nigel’s title fights in uk including G-man. Loved his passion but at s/middle v Toney he wouldn’t catch him clean. Toney would do a clinic on him.. Benns sheer determination would see him share or even nick the odd rd but this would be more due to toneys apathy at times I’m a fight he was well winning... hurts benn several times throughout the fight before lowering the boom, clinically in the 7th by showing a jab to the belly then crashing overhand right left hook tho the head to end matters👍

There is so much revisionist history on here regarding Toney at MW, He was clearly beaten by Dave Tiberi and a lot of people thought he lost to Reggie Johnson.

There was once a UK video link interview with James Toney, Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn when all three were super middle champions. Although Toney was happily trash talking up the match ups, you could clearly tell neither Nigel or Chris fancied it at all. I suspect they'd both spent enough time inside American gyms to know what kind of technical challenges Toney would pose them.

You remember it wrong then. He did not say that. It was Eubank he had a real pop at with the momma comment and if I remember right, he said: "I'll beat you and your momma's ass."

Nightmare style matchup for Benn. At Super Middleweight this would be a little better for Toney. He was draining hard to make 160.

It's a fight I'd rather enjoy watching than making a prediction. But I'm going with Toney.
