If a fighter "floors" their opponent, they cannot hit him them when they're on the canvas. It’s a fundamental rule that has existed for decades or perhaps even as long as a century.

Roy Jones Jr. was disqualified when he intentionally landed a right hook, thrown from the orthodox stance, after Montell Griffin was knocked down.

Quinton Rankin did not receive a disqualification when he intentionally landed a left hook, thrown from a southpaw stance, after Chad Dawson was knocked down.

Therefore, the referee did Quinton Rankin a huge favour when he only deducted a point from him and gave Chad Dawson time to recover.

the deduction/warning after though seemed really weak, like he took the time just because chad was complaining. and was that right after having already deducted a point? chad got lucky because most refs are not going to such lengths to take timeouts for that stuff

I’m not going to disagree with that separate point, but Quinton Rankin definitely threw an intentional left hook after Chad Dawson was decked and was lucky to avoid being disqualified immediately.

Quinton adjusted his posture, bent at the waist and was looking directly at Dawson after Chad had already taken a knee, when he connected with that left hook of his.

It wasn’t a knee-jerk reaction whereby Rankin was blindly flailing his shots without realising Dawson was decked. It was definitely a premeditated decision.
