Gennady Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia - TBA
With his arch-rival Canelo Alvarez likely to fight Sergey Kovalev next (but almost certainly not in September as had been previously suggested; Kovalev reportedly all set to defend against Anthony Yarde in Russia on August 24), former world middleweight king Gennady Golovkin is looking at other options for his next outing..
And, according to a tweet from boxing writer Mike Coppinger, GGG, and DAZN, might have found a suitable dance partner in the form of Mexican warrior Jaime Munguia. According to “sources,” a Golovkin-Munguia fight could happen over Mexican Independence Day weekend, if Canelo does not fight then (and if Canelo is waiting for Kovalev and Kovalev only, that 175 pound fight is highly unlikely for September).
So it seems it’s all down to Canelo, what he wants to do next. DAZN want a big fight to take place over the big Mexican holiday and Munguia, a classic Mexican warrior, against the second-biggest star in the middleweight division, would do nicely. Munguia and GGG were somewhat close to fighting one another back when GGG-Canelo II was postponed due to you know what. Needing a late sub, GGG and his team looked at Munguia, only for the Nevada State Athletic Commission to say no to the match-up, declaring how 22 year old Munguia lacked experience.

Re: Gennady Golovkin vs, Jaime Munguia - September 2019?
When the fight was speculated last year, GGG got slated and it was the NSAC who declined to sanction the fight..
Now we are over a year on from there.. Munguia has since won the WBO 154 belt and defended it a nu,mber of times.. His perfomances have been slippin, he was only able to do damage on smaller/fringe guys (Ali and Cook),
Some say he's slowly being found out and he's not that good anyway, he's still only 22.. Some say he's struggling to make the weight..
Thoughts?

Re: Gennady Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia - September 2019?
It seems that GGG has a penchant for competing against smaller guys that had previously and relatively recently competed in lower weight classes, such as these fighters he faced from the time he initially became a world champion:
• Nilson Julio Tapia (light middleweight)
• Milton Nunez (light middleweight)
• Kassim Ouma (light middleweight)
• Gabriel Rosado (light middleweight)
• Nobuhiro Ishida (light middleweight)
• Matthew Macklin (welterweight)
• Osumanu Adama (light middleweight)
• Marco Antonio Rubio (welterweight)
• Willie Monroe Jr. (light middleweight)
• David Lemieux (light middleweight)
• Kell Brook (welterweight)
• Canelo (light welterweight)
• Vanes Martirosyan (light middleweight)
• Jaime Munguia (light welterweight)
We know for certain that GGG has been competing at 165lbs as an amateur and 160lbs as a pro for more than sixteen years, which means he’s not a “small” middleweight by any means. Gennadiy is also taller than the average height of the opponents he’s faced from the start of his world title reign onwards.
I‘m probably going to receive a lot of hate for this post, but the above facts are impossible to refute. Please, just take a quick look at each of these guys resumes' prior to facing GGG and you'll surely appreciate the legitimacy of the point I'm making.
For almost a decade we’ve been hearing about stories relating to how GGG busted up Sergey Kovalev and also world-rated cruiserweights in sparring and that Golovkin is willing to face the very best from the heavier weight classes, but Gennadiy’s team have never attempted to justify this hype by proving it inside the ring.
And GGG bullying another smaller guy during his next outing isn’t going enhance his legacy one iota.
I’ve always been a huge fan of GGG’s pugilistic talents, but I really can’t endorse this potential bout.
I’m sorry, but enough is enough! We can’t keep applauding GGG and pretending that he can do no wrong, because if this fight really does come to fruition, then the self-managed, self-promoted Golovkin will be solely responsible for this farce!

Munguia isn't really that small.. He's very young and will likely end up finishing his career at 175 or 168 at least. Saying he used to be a light welterweight is saying Canelo used to be a welterweight, but you marked Canelo as a LMW.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑02 Jul 2019, 05:59 It seems that GGG has a penchant for competing against smaller guys that had previously and relatively recently competed in lower weight classes, such as these fighters he faced from the time he initially became a world champion:

Canelo can be classed as a career 154/160.. At the moment, Munguia is too big for 154.. I think at the end of his career, he will be mostly known as a middleweight.

Even if you don't agree with one or two of the specific names I listed, what I wrote is technically accurate and it's very challenging to undermine the general point I'm making.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑02 Jul 2019, 07:14 Munguia isn't really that small.. Look at the names I previously listed and review: their resumes'; their form at 160lbs; and their middleweight experience/accomplishments prior to facing GGG.
The same applies to Munguia, except Jaime's form at 154lbs hasn't been impressive recently either.
GGG is facing another smaller guy who hasn't beaten any world-rated middleweights.

Ishida is the biggest Jr middle I've ever seen. He was fit at heavyweight.

No guarantee yet that Munguia will abandon 154.
I think he'll stay at that weight through the year.
But what a delight it would be to Jaime eventually move up and smack Golovkin around. Educate him again on Mexican Style.

..I don't mind that as long as Munguia doesn't turn out to be a cheat like his protected compatriot..

Some protection.
One big name opponent after another for Canelo. In this era, he boasts a resume for the ages.
If every fighter was protected as much as Canelo, boxing might actually become a popular sport again.

I still wait for him to grow a pair and start seeing the world..obviously in vain..SenorPipino wrote: ↑02 Jul 2019, 10:50 Some protection.

One after another: Khan, Liam Smith, drained JCCJ, Fielding. Waited for Golovkin to get older before facing him.
Re: Gennady Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia - September 2019?
Canelo would destroy him.

Re: Gennady Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia - September 2019?
Oh yeah, I forgot. Canelo haters/Golovkin Groupies spend their life searching for any little detail they can uncover to discredit the Face of Boxing.
Doesn' t matter who Canelo beats. Who he fights. How popular and mega-successful he is. There's gotta be a comforting explanation, usually birthed in murky conspiracy, to explain it all.
Let's see: Golovkin twice. Mayweather. Cotto. Lara. Jacobs. Chavez. Not good enough for those who worship at the faded altar of Golovkin.
Apparently Canelo can't ever match that sterling HOF lineup Saint Golovkin has encountered fight after fight.
Oh well. Let's Roll(s).

Re: Gennady Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia - September 2019?
It’s rather intriguing to see GGG's die-hard’s refrain from defending Jaime Munguia’s credentials as being a credible next opponent for their guy and instead opt to attack the type of opposition that Canelo faces.
For the record, even though I’m a self-confessed long-time admirer of Golovkin, I would cheer for the upset victory for Jaime Munguia if this bout actually became a reality.
The Mexican is a colossal underdog of “David and Goliath” proportions and I feel that whenever A-side fighters make premeditated decisions to engage in mismatches against blatantly overmatched opponents’, especially when they’re self-managed and self-promoted, then they deserve to slip on the odd banana skin every now and then.
It won’t happen though, GGG will probably dispose of Munguia whenever he deems fit, after perhaps playing possum for a couple of rounds in order to "put on a big drama show!"

Re: Gennady Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia - September 2019?
Oh yeah, another thing I forgot. Some tired stuff about Canelo being a doper.
A little episode from what seems like centuries ago, that only Golovkin Groupies still obsess about. The sane world has already forgotten that trivial nonsense.
But it's more comforting to ignore that Canelo breezed through the hair follicle test and the NSAC ruled the trace clenbuterol ingestion accidental.
Yes, why wallow in facts when Canelo must be discredited at all cost, so that his standing at the absolute top of boxing's food chain can be diminished?
But you can't sink a battleship with a few insignificant spitwads.

that's the usual excuse...ask them all and you'll get the same answer..SenorPipino wrote: ↑02 Jul 2019, 11:52 Oh yeah, another thing I forgot. Some tired stuff about Canelo being a doper.

Re: Gennady Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia - September 2019?
You're talking about the guy who fought Golovkin twice, Mayweather, Lara, Jacobs, and Cotto?? Dude, wake-up. He's one of the least protected fighters there is. He fought the best fighter other than himself in three different divisions.

Mayweather, Cotto, Mosley and Golovkin were post-prime. With Golovkin and Lara, he needed judges' help (i.e. protection). He even needed to dehydrate JCCJ.

Munguia is a crappy opponent. There is no question about that, and if he is in fact picked, it proves that there is definitely something wrong with Golovkin's condition. However, this is not an excuse for prime Canelo's record of Khan, Liam Smith, drained JCCJ and Fielding.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑02 Jul 2019, 11:45 It’s rather intriguing to see GGG's die-hard’s refrain from defending Jaime Munguia’s credentials as being a credible next opponent for their guy and instead opt to attack the type of opposition that Canelo faces.

I don't have a problem with munguia. It will be entertaining. He'll land.
Re: Gennady Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia - September 2019?
..before I start thinking of bashing GGG for his NEXT possible opponent, let's be clear that his FIRST choice is to rematch Canelo..isn't Canelo the one who's been trying to avoid GGG at all costs at least for the time being? isn't it also clear that the Mexican superstar has been delaying this fight for obvious reasons?
