Could canelo beat Andy Ruiz?

Post by paddy chavez »

I see canelo wants to fight kovalev @175 I presume but could he compete with Ruiz at heavyweight? Obviously Saul is no heavyweight but what made Ruiz dangerous vs AJ his speed of hands and punching between AJs shots wouldn't work on the smaller more mobile Alvarez. I'm really not sure on what Ruiz's punches would do to canelo who showed an iron chin vs ggg ..
I don't think it's unthinkable that canelo could win and become the heavyweight champ.

Yes Ruiz is 80 pounds bigger but 50 of that is fat ,is it that much more of a jump than Roy Jones vs John Ruiz? I'm not saying canelo would win but I don't think it's that crazy

He’d have to increase his already impressive PED intake significantly, but who knows

RJJ was in and out all the way against John Ruiz and barely got hit all night. Not really Canelo's type of thing, he's not as fast or elusive as peak RJJ

I agree canelo doesn't have great feet but he doesn't take many shots cleanly as he rides the shots ....

rjj vs ruiz is the absolute perfect set of abilities though to favor the smaller guy. atg level speed and athleticsm vs a slow plodding fighter without serious power

There’s a Babyshambles song called “Paddy Put the Pipe Down” it sprang to mind when I read the topic...

Read Andy Lee's book to get an idea of the disparity in power and strength between middleweights and heavyweights.

Ruiz would brutalize Canelo. Even after AJ he's being under-estimated once again.

Canlelo is no RJJ and might be controvisial here, think Andy Ruiz is better than John Ruiz.

Canelo isn't a monster a Middleweight (starting his career at Welter).

I think though an exceptional Light Heavy / Cruiser might fancy their chances though. The minute the ref waved it off I thought "Is a Bellew comeback on".

Not a chance in hell, andy ruiz is a dangerous heavyweight,he can punch hard and can string shots together not like john ruiz, canelo is no RJJ either, remember at that time RJJ was untouchable hardly anyone layed a glove on him,RJJ would of smashed canelo up within 3 rounds and andy ruiz would of ran through john ruiz like a hot knife through butter.

If Canelo will bulk up for the HWs, Ruiz will whoop him, but, if Canelo will gain all the weight with the fat, he will have a chance. And PED meat won't help him. Only snickers diet will allow him to counteract Ruiz.

Ruiz vs Ruiz would have been intriguing - John is underated. He had a good chin and would have made Andy work more than Joshua did.... would he have had the stamina? I don't know. John find a way (most of the time) to nullify opponents who seemingly had advantages - whether that was size (Valuev - okay I know he lost officially but many saw him winning, there was also McCline who he legitmately beat), skill - Johnson, Oquendo - he seemed to find a way. He even ran a peak Chagaev very close when over the hill a tad himself.

Aside from Tua - Ruiz's non controvesial loses were against fighters far far superior in skill than Andy Ruiz can dream about. Before we start considering Andy Ruiz an ATG - lets not forget he is 1-1 in this current crop of world class heavyweights (and this current crop is nothing to write home). There is still a legitmate school of thought that Hughie Fury ran Joseph Parker closer than Andy Ruiz did.

John Ruiz record in world class is 5-7-1 - but that is still 4 more wins than Andy Ruiz and of those 7 loses - 4 were deemed close / controvesial (Holyfield, Valuev x 2 and Chagaev) and I am also counting the Toney fight as a lose and not a ND which is the official call. The legitimate non controvsial loses in my eyes were vs Haye (when over the hill), RJJ and Toney.... and those three would have beaten Andy Ruiz comfortably IMO.

Lets just see what Andy Ruiz can do in a rematch before hailing him as something special.
