Sure can shake up the rankings some. Weed out a few names from the discussion.

Re: HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN
Remember a few months back when there were supposed to be a bunch of good heavyweight match ups? There was even a thread on it.
I said then that I'd be impressed if 10% of the match ups actually happen.
I feel the same way now. Injuries, contract negotiations and so on will screw up several of these

Oh yeah! It was my thread! I remember your comment and resented it as all those fights fell apart! (well, at least the good ones)tiny_acres wrote: ↑02 Jul 2019, 20:56 Remember a few months back when there were supposed to be a bunch of good heavyweight match ups? There was even a thread on it.

Re: HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN
Povetkin v Pulev eh, I'd not heard that one. That would be a fight I'd be very interested to see (or either of them against Ortiz)
I can't see it though. Why would Pulev risk his mandatory IBF status? Besides I always say Pulev is a master at picking opponents who are respectable and semi-relevant, yet not very likely to beat him. Povetkin would be a bit risky by Pulev's standards.

I've not heard of that either. What is your source for that alleged fight, Big Doug? They are both my guys so I don't want them to fight each other now. Besides, like Mr Slim said, what would be the point for Pulev?

Extraordinarily interesting time in the heavies. I don't notice any gross mismatches that are so common in boxing either.

Actually, Povetkin almost disapeared from Russian forums/news last half a year. More than 9 months from his last fight, nothing scheduled, he is 40+...looks like he retired.
Maybe he’ll make couple of “patriotic fights” with tomato cans and join the Duma (Russian Parliament, kind off) in 2021. Valuev and Pirog are already in the Duma...
Re: HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN
I thought Povetkin had picked up an injury. Didn't he pull out of a couple of scheduled fights (Hunter for one?) or am I imagining it?

Re: HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN
If I remember well he was scheduled to fight TBA in Chicago at some point.
And it was some rumor about some event in Saudia....maybe vs Hunter.
Re: HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN
Yeah he was meant to be Usyk's opponent, then he was replaced by Takam, then Usyk tore his bicep. It's all coming back to me now
The reason for Povetkin being replaced by Usyk is a bit hazy though.
Edit: I mean replaced by Takam

That’s false. A week hasn’t gone by without a Povetkin post here and this is the only boxing forum worth a damn and that’s not saying much. These Ruskies love that bowlcutt’d fruitcake.

Today's news:
"Oleksandr Usyk has confirmed that while he was originally slated to fight Alexander Povetkin, he turned down the fight, attributing politics as the reason."
https://www.fightsports.tv/usyk-not-int ... -povetkin/
Last week:
"Povetkin is now likely to return to the ring on July 27 in Arlington. It is still unknown who will be the opponent of Povetkin, for whom this will be the first performance after last year's defeat at the hands of Anthony Joshua.
The main event of the evening of boxing in Texas will be a unification bout in the super lightweight division between Maurice Hooker and Jose Ramirez. In the Arlington Murat Gassiev also debuts in the heavyweight division in the duel against Joey Dawejko."

Re: HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN
I guess I can buy politics as a reason for Usyk not wanting to face Povetkin but would that not have been a reason to prevent this even getting beyond the suggestion stage?
I could be wrong but from what I remember this was being talked about as if it was "a happening fight" and some way down the road beforeTakam's name came up as a replacement.
I'd have thought Usyk would have shut down any talk of Povetkin as a potential opponent from the moment it was mooted if politics was the reason - I mean it's not like Russia invaded Crimea or something halfway through negotiations, then it would make perfect sense..

Re: HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN
Povetkin was supposed to fight on the undercard. I wouldn't expect too many top fights from dazn with the contracts they're giving away.
Re: HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN
The undercard of Usyk v Takam? Ok.

Re: HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN
Povetkin had surgery on both of his elbows in, Nov. 2018. He is reportedly good to go but I don't know if any of the above fight rumors are true.
